I have an 81 with a 22r and it wont stay started. It will run when I have my foot on the gas but as soon as I let off it dies does anyone know what my problem might be?

no, I bought it from a buddy a couple weeks ago and it was fine and now its not.

 

It sounds like the fuel cut solenoid isn't working. It's on the back of your carb, and has two wires going to it. It should make a clicking sound when the key is turned on. Do a search on this forum for fuel cut solenoid. Dean

I would try to manually apply voltage and ground to the two wires in question, you should hear a click from the solenoid on both application and removal of voltage if it is working. If you hear the click when you manually apply voltage, re-connect the harness, and get someone to turn the key back and forth from the "On" to "ACC" positions, you should hear a click from the solenoid every time the ignition moves.

If the solenoid works when you manually apply voltage, but not when you cycle the ignition, you have a shorted wire. If it never works, you have a bad solenoid.

Do try that forum search for fuel cut solenoid, there is a lot of info posted on this, with much more in-depth troubleshooting.

 

The best way to fix that fuel cut solenoid is to take the Aisin carb that it's attached to and throw it in the trash. Replace it with a Weber.

 

Hey man, don't knock the Aisin. A little tuning, and some vacuum line removal, and it runs as good as a 32/36...

When I picked up my truck, it had this issue. Turns out the only thing holding the wires in the back of the connector was an electrical tape hack job. Yanked the same connector out of a tercel, moved the wires to the appropriate locations in the connector and spliced it in.

 

Yeah, I have seen this a few times. One of the BAD things about the Aisin (Gov't Mule is going to love this) is that it involves a fuel cutoff solenoid (which is easily replaceable, and can be purchased at any parts house) in the same plug and harness as a choke coil, which in most cases is riveted on and unavailable to purchase without buying a whole damn carb.

I cut the connector off completely on both sides, and replaced it with shielded disconnects. For ease of re-installation, I also color coded the wires with colored electrical tape before cutting them. Now, if I need to replace a solenoid, I just crimp on disconnects and rock.

 

Do you have any experience with this happening intermittently? I've had my Aisin carb rebuilt, and the same stuff happens. Lately, only when it warms up a bit (like above freezing) it will have stalling fits. Won't run unless I keep my foot on the gas. But it will just as quickly go away...and run fine. Could it just be a solenoid going bad, but not completely bad yet? It happens rarely enough that I just haven't gotten around to tearing into it...This happens more frequently in the summer.

Can someone show me in a pic our drawng which vacume lines to get rid of ect I'm having same prob but I notice gas leaking today by that thing that pumps gas in carb if u push it but I have some lines on and hook some not would like a pic our something so I can get the right one hook up and rid of the ones I don't need thanks
