Pretty simple question...

Replace the power steering pump with an aftermarket (Napa, etc..) or rebuild the OEM pump? As most, I only want to tackle this job once. Pros - cons-thoughts?

I have 213K miles on my 92 4Runner and I just bought a seal kit and resealed the pump myself. It takes a little time and patients, but it is pretty easy. I did not want a reman (personal preference)

I used this kit 04446-33021 for my 92 4Runner with 3VZE. It was $27.89 plus shipping through toyotapartsales.com

 

Thanks guys - my dealer quoted me kit# 04446-20090 for ~ $50. I gave them my VIN # so maybe there are some slight differences btw in years, or the part# changed.

 

It's easy to do. Just be sure to use the real toyota kit.

Yes there are several different kits. When I did mine I called 3 different dealers and got 3 different part numbers.

 

I ordered part# 04446-20090 - rebuild gasket kit, $50.38.

 

That is the same kit I ended up with. I think the 04446-33021 was superseded by 04446-20090.

Auto zone has a power steering pump seal kit for 13.99 (Duralast) . I'm going to give it a shot today. I would normally go to the dealer on a part like this but the p/s pump is pretty easy to get to so Im willing to take the risk. Plus if it doesn't work its only 14 bucks ....that I could probably get back...mines leaking from the back plate pretty bad.

USE ATF in your p/s pump....for those of us who didn't know this already :-)

 

Are you sure it's the shaft that's leaking & not the idle-up valve on the back of the pump? You can remove that valve & plug the hole as it's useless. I actually soldered the valve closed & put it back in...cost me about $.10 worth of solder~

The valve itself is almost $200 from a dealer. Common failure point.

 

My pump is definatly leaking from the back plate. I picked up a rebuild kit from autozone that came with a couple o rings and a snap type retainer. The instructions suck and all it shows is an exploded view of the pump with all the individual parts numbered. So I guess tomorrow ill pull the pump out and see if i can get it apart.

 

Im surprised so many people go the rebuild way on a cheap part. Get a $65 aftermarket rebuilt one. Im sure the fail rate isnt that significant to foster any real fears. I put a napa one. Ill keep an eye on its performance. Im sure its fine.

 

I spent 60 bucks on steering gear rebuild kit. Rebuilt It myself and regretted it. It works fine but leaks from the input shaft. Im hoping it will seal itaelf through usage pressure... I should have bought a rebuilt one.

 

I just spent yesterday rebuilding mine with the $18. seal kit and today I noticed its still freakin leaking from the back plate!!....after all that work I'm pissed, so just ordered a reman. one from Advanced for 58 bucks....hopefully this will do the trick....I hate leaks!.....
