88 22re sputtering bad

I have an 88 pickup with a 22re that is my daily driver. the other day it started sputtering real bad. I replaced the fuel filter and it didn't change a thing. I checked the diagnostic code after that and it is throwing code 51. I checked the resistance of the tps in wide open and all the way closed and everything checked out fine. I can't find my feeler guages to check in between but I will today. Any ideas?

Check your injectors to see that they are firing (clicking). I discovered that my #1 injector failed causing major sputtering and hesitation. They are in the mail to be rebuilt.

Thanks I will test them and see if they are firing. Would that make my ecu throw the code for the throttle position sensor? This is driving me nuts.

Funny that you should ask, mine was throwing a code 41. Once I get the injectors back and installed I will be able to tell more.

With the feller guages in place between the throttle screw and stop, the ohm meter doesn't read anything.

It was set at 20k. I think maybe the connection inside is broken or something. I got a new tps today and will let you know if it works. (fingers crossed)

I am thinking maybe the wiring to the tps is bad, or I got a bad tps from schucks. It doesn't even want to idle now.

i am having the EXACT same problem as you and i have done everything you have done so far. just tonight i determined that my wires are good because i tested with an ohm meter. i have replaced the tps with no luck and now my conclusion is i have a bad ECU. thats all i can think of im throwing the same code you are 11 which is the tps code as you know. ill be watching this thread. i plan on getting an ecu in the next couple days so if yours isnt fixed by then ill let you know how it worked for me.

Thanks. I am not sure about it being the ecu though. I drove mine everyday before it started sputtering and I dont think the ecu would just take a like that. Also, after i replaced the tps, it stopped throwing all codes. According to my ecu, it is perfect.

Highly doubtful it is the ECU. Follow 4Crawler's procedure for tps adjustment to the letter, you should be golden - or you will find your problem.

Yea 4 crawlers way is different than the fsm's in that it says to use a .85 mm feeler guage and my manual says to use a .47. not sure which is right, but either way I can't get my brand new tps adjusted right so I have no clue if that's it or not. It is really pissing me off and I am about to shove my truck off a cliff.

Does anyone know what the "vsv for as" is for on the valve cover? The wires had come out of the connector and i didn't notice. Could this cause my sputtering problem?
