1990 Suddent Loss of Power

hi,
1990 TOY P/U, v6 158K miles
i'm having an intermittent problem where i am cruising at 55-70 mph, either in 4 or 5th gear and i suddenly have a complete loss of power, the truck bucks slower when this happens, if i push the accel nothing, but, if i wait a few seconds i'll get power back. i've only seen this at highway speeds. i'm lost, any thoughts?
thanks.

hi,

now the engine light is turning on. i did the diag code and it was 42, which is supposed to be the vehicle speed sensor.

i suppose if this sensor is not functioning properly it could be thinking the engine is in a serious over speed condition and cutting fuel supply? does anyone know if this is a possibility?

also, does anyone know the location of the VSS? is it someplace i can get to when i'm on my back under the truck? or should i just take it to the dealer?

anyone have a link for a 1990 toyota 4WD PU service manual? (i have them, but they are in alaska and i am in florida....)

thanks.

I know this is years after the original posting, but this problem most closely mirrors mine: 1988 3VZE 5 speed 4x4 275,000 miles. Only on the freeway at 60mph or so, 5th gear, the engine suddenly loses power like somebody shut off the key. 3 to 5 seconds later, it comes back to life completely. There's no sputtering or anything beforehand, and it runs like a champ afterwards. On a couple of occasions, this has happened twice on my 35 minute freeway ride. Sometimes it will take a month or more off and just run fine. What component does this? The lights stay on when this happens, and all the plugs and connectors seem tight. Thanks for any help.

A little more about my truck: It's a 1988 5 speed 3VZE 4x4 longbed DLX with 275K on it that I bought from an old guy who bought it new, loved it, maintained it well, and drove it until he died. Now it's my turn. I bought it 7 months ago and I plan to drive it forever. I described my problem above, and here's what I've done to the truck since I bought it: Put in a SR5 instrument cluster and the appropriate oil pressure sender, (thanks to those who wrote that up,) changed out the water temp sensor, oxygen sensor, clutch master cylinder, cap, rotor, plugs, and plug wires. Changed out the water pump, timing belt, tensioner, and idler pulleys. Cleaned the throttle body, and adjusted timing to 12 degrees, adjusted the idle. I put in a drop-in K&N air filter and replaced the exhaust with a 2 1/4" Magna Flow cat-back system. It feels like I gained a couple of mpg with the exhaust replacement.

I've checked the TPS and the VAFM, and all those numbers check out, and I've checked all the electrical and vacuum connections that I can find. It doesn't seem to matter if I hit bumps or not, and it's not getting any worse. I sure would appreciate any opinions on this.
