And, of course I'm only showing up to beg for a handout

Well, back in December, I was being less than judicious and smacked my truck into a light pole. The oil cooler tank on the radiator is cracked, fan has a chipped blade, in addition to the bent metal...

After taking a few days after it happened to be pi$$ed and depressed, I got the (what-TMC-laughingly-calls-a) bumper off and dug around in it. I think I can get it back going myself with a new radiator (I'm pretty sure there's no practical way to replace just the oil cooler tank).

The problem is that the radiator is currently jammed against the fan by the bent body piece between the frame mounts





Is there anybody in the NYC area that has a way to bend that piece back? I'm in Staten Island. The great tragedy is that I was a few days away from make my way back south after having decided my time here in NYC was at it's close...

I thought about trying a cable puller...I don't know.

cable puller and a tree. Tie into the holes in the lower radiator core support (the part currently mashed into the radiator. Or cut it out, looks like you need to have the lower core support replaced anyays. I would replace the fan as the imbalance from the chiped blade can do further damage. Good luck bud.

 

An alternative to pulling it out would be to just cut it out and reweld a new piece of rectangle stock in its place.

 

Your options are very limited. If you intend to restore this to drivabilty without concern for looks, you will need to do as was mentioned, cable puller and get the lower radiator support pulled out. Once you get the pressue off the damaged radiator, it should be a pretty straight forward removal. If the radiator side supports are not bent then you should be able to put a replacement radiator in and bolt it up. If you are or have considered the electric fan mod, this would be a gr8 opportunity to install it. You are goning to need to replace the damaged clutch fan anyway so you could just remove it and then mount the Taurus/Speedlite/What-ever electric fan to the new radiator shroud and hook it all up. Either way replace the broken fan. What did the insurance company tell you the cost to fix? Really a shame it is all busted up like that. Good luck

 

Is it me, or does it look like that piece is bolted on in the 2nd pic??

 

the body is bolted on the frame, the piece is part of the body [welded to the body]

 

it's part of the radiator core support. I think I've figured out that I can just unbolt the entire core support and replace the whole thing.

I'm somewhat mulling the electric fan mod. I'm not certain if I want to get into all the junkyard searching necessary and wire hacking. I'm still a bit miffed with the salvage industry after I had two $500 offers for the whole truck

Good news -

Using the lingering energy garnered from a Saints' Super Bowl win (wow), finally took a shot at the lower radiator support with the cable puller and got things loose.

Bad news -

The fan pulley is broken off of the impeller shaft coming out of the water pump. I'm afraid my friend JB Weld isn't up to this one (though I'm completely open to being convinced otherwise).

sounds like the perfect efan opportunity, or try finding the bracket at a wrecker. The dealer is gonna want a lot for that bracket
