something causing rear axle sideways movement

IS there anything that can be worn out and cause some sideways axle movement. LIke worn out bushings on something. any ideas\

UPDATE = FIXED

The bolts on the panhard bar were worn down allowing for play in the ends. I just crammed some grease in the ends and tightened it all down. I getting new bolts soon, but grease worked for quick fix

Well the panhard bar is the main component which stabilizes the lateral movement of the axle, so i would look there.

Obviously you have 4 links as well, all with bushings that could age and cause movement. I haven't seen or heard much of this being a problem though..

How do you know its moving? Can you feel it while driving? There will be movement of the axle offroading form side to side due to the compression of the springs, and the panhard itself moving (and pushing the axle).

I have never heard of such a thing on a Toyota. Going off my Jeep knowlodge check bushings and as Baja said check the panhard bar. also is it lifted? I heard when you lift it you need to drop the bar a lil.

Yeah it helps to have the panhard bar parallel to the ground, or on level with the axle..

yeah its lifted. and my panhard bar has been extended to make the axle centered again. I am getting a clunk on bumps. and i can feel it in the floor. I think i am getting some side to side shift in the rear because if i grab the front bumper push/pull from left to right i get some clunk noise in the rear end as it goes left and right. im lost at what could cause this . something could be worn out because it at 219,000 miles. any ideas

Have someone else push/pull the truck while you are behind/underneath looking/listening for the clunk.

Upper shock bushings missing or loose shock nut? This will cause an enfuriating clunk. As mentioned above, get a friend to push around on the truck while you nose around under there.

Hmmm, sounds a lil like me. When i hit a bump i feel/hear a clunk. I have a feeling its my strut. Balljoints are all 2yrs old. Other then that maybe my tierods (which are about toast). It IS on the side where the bushing in the strut is out (thank you autozone struts im on number 2, and the KYB is just as old and is just fine). Im going to keep looking over this to see what others say...

You have my attention.

Mine does the same, has done since I put the lift in 3 years ago. It's really noticeable going over speed bumps diagonally, feels like the back end moves a few inches sideways. So far I, and a couple of mechanics, haven't found anything loose, worn or broken.

there seem to be no handling issues at all, and i checked my shocks and the are fine too. I guess i may have to live with this noise. And eric-the-red, i have the same problem over speed bumps. it does not happen when you go over them straight. Im still lost, and its really bothering me

Well As soon as you fig it out let me know. Cause Ive noticed on my truck when i make a turn i hear something knock in the rear end. Like something is shifting and hitting the side of my truck. Theres nothing back there loose as far as I know so I'm starting to believe it is my Drive Shaft shifting.... Hopefully a easy and cheap fix? im short on cash haha.

Mine makes noise and I am pretty sure it is my spare rubbing the panhard. I have a 255/85r16 under there.

i have a stock spare, and i am positive that the noise i am hearing is not the spare. and as for the panhard bar problem i cut mine in half and welded a ring of metal in, therefore making it longer. i added about 1/2 inch. it was cheap and easy. i really this isnot a problem in the axel

I have the same noise when going over bumps and rock the back of the vehicle side to side.

Found that it was worn bushings in the pan hard rod. Disconnect one side then rock the vehicle. If the noise goes away, it is a good sign that the rod is the trouble.

Same thing here. Was wheelin a week ago in Sedona and when I would go over a large rock the back end seemed to wiggle like a stripper's ass.

I''m also convinced it's worn bushings in the Panhard bar, upper links or lower arms. Anyone know where to get some new Panhard bushings? I think that's one component where urethane pieces could to some real good.

i disconnected mine and the noise went away! so do i get a whole new panhard bar to fix this. I do not think the bushings are replaceable. This is good news. I hope it will go away soon. it seems many of you have this same exact problem

IS THERE A DEFINING WAY TO KNOW IF THE BUSHINGS ON THE PANHARD BAR ARE BAD???
