I've used many different 3rd's in my 85? (not exactly sure of it's year) 8" 2wd rear end.
There are a couple differences over the years, but that's it.
In the early 80's (until 82 I think, maybe 83), there was a different driveshaft bolt pattern - that can be changed to the later 80's and 90's version.
The turbo and v6 3rd uses a thicker ring gear, but you can grind the housing to accept the 3rd (I just did that with mine today).
I have heard of one case where a 7.5" rear end was used on a 4wd, maybe that's what he's thinking about?
If so, that is the standard 2wd rear end (not 1 ton).
Any other reason they said why only 84?
sounds strange to me.
Hope this helps,
Todd

If it's a 4wd and still has the stock rear axle, you can use any year 8" diff.

toyota rear

wimpywade94 any year rear centersection from 1984-95 4x4's will be a direct fit. the 79-83 ones will fit also work if you change the yoke. the one from your 94 your parting out will fit rite in. if you have the whole rear left swap it in the back you get the better brakes. 10" brakes to 11.5" brakes.

The complete rear from the 94 is a little wider (wheel to wheel) than the 84. It will work, but you should know that first.

wimpywade94 how much do they want for the truck? if it's under $500 you better snag it up.

I tried to PM you, but it's full.

I've got a complete rear end for sale with 5.29 gears, ARB locker, disc brake conversion... It's already been converted for leafs as well. New calipers and pads one week ago and new bearings.
