Hey guys

i rebuilt the head on my 86 22r i have everything back together but i tried starting it and it wont start it cranks and then backsfires and wont start i think its the timing but not sure dont know what to do

 

More info and details would help. What exactly did you do, and how? Timing chain could be on wrong, valves not adjusted correctly, distributor 180 degrees out, etc.

 

i replaced all the gaskets for the head and i took everything apart was gonna change the timing chain but in the end i didnt put it all back together and tried to start it up and it would backfire out of the carb

 

You should have put in a new timing set while you had it apart unless yours is already fresh.

Did you:

• Set the engine to TDC before removing the distributor?
• Keep the chain in place on both upper and lower timing gears without letting it skip?
• Install the head with cam in correct position?
• Install distributor with the rotor pointing roughly 12:00, so it rotates over to about 11:00 (under #1 on the cap) when fully inserted?

More info about how you went about doing this job would help determine what might be wrong.

 

when i had the head off i was going to replace the timing chain but it looked fairling new so i didnt i never took it off the lower timing gear but i did take it off the upper timing gear and i had it on TDC i made sure the head and cam were in the correct position the only two problems i can think of doing is if i let the upper timing gear jump while the lower timing gear stayed the same or distributor but im fairly positive the distributor is correct but ill double check tomorrow morning and im a noob at this but ill give you a step by step of what i did i disconnect battery took off fan shroud and radiator took off airbox and carb took off air intake and header then the valve cover and i took off the whole head cleaned everything off put new water pump was taking off timing chain and decided not to because it looked fairly good and put in new gaskets then started reversing my steps now it is is backfiring through the carb sorry if this doesnt help ask any question that would help make it clearer for you

 

I'm not sure it is an issue with his valves..

It sounds like your timing is out of whack. Did you note the position of your rotor (on the dist.) before you removed it? If so, you should have been able to get it close when you reinstalled.

 

I doubt the problem is valves either, but without more details it's hard to tell. Timing is also my guess. Chain and/or distributor.

I don't know if this will help diagnose, but here are pictures of the cam timing gear and rotor positions at TDC before I took my engine apart.

 

ya i took some of my engine apart today and did the timing again and its all correct and i started it up and had it running for a bit but it died but i think thats cuz the carburator is gummed up so im taking the carb off and cleaning it up tomorow and we will see if i just did the timing wrong hopefully it starts up tomorow and thanks for the help

Please let us know what solves the problem.

 

Some have converted to 4x4, or at least have asked about doing it. From what I understand it's pretty involved. I think you'd be better off buying another truck.

this happened last year when i first started by doing my first head on my 1980 20r with a weber.

it backfired out of the carb too. it turns out it was one tooth off on the chain. 2 friends of mine and i literally held a long screwdriver to press the chain tensioner in while the other 2 moved the cam gear one tooth and the other held the flashlight cuz it was at night. i didnt have to take the timing cover apart again!!!! yes!

that could be your problem but no matter what just to make sure everything was put back together right you HAVE to check timing. my guess is the dist. is 180 out. its really easy to make that mistake.

 

I concur, it sounds like the distributor is out of wack

 

sorry it took so long for me to reply ive been to busy with school and friends but it was the distributor i changed that and the spark plugs and wires and it started up for me but now i have a coolant leak from my intake
