shakes at higher speeds
Hi everyone,
95 4runner is shaking when I get to higher speeds. It shakes and vibrates for a while and then stops. It usually starts at around 45mph and its on and off up until about 65-70mph. My rpms usually don't go higher than about 3000. I can really feel the vibration in the front of the car.
I know i have to replace the idler arm bushing but other then that the susupension looks good based on what the shop guys told me today while they were welding my exhaust on.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Abe I just figure there has to be more than just that idler bushing for the amount of shaking. if i'm just driving in town and keeping under 40 there is usually no shaking.
how do i know if the wheel bearings are bad?

You could spend the next few months balancing tires, changing shocks, ball joints, tie-rod ends, wheel bearings, steering dampener, etc. chasing down this vibration only to find out that the part you already knew needed replacing.... need I say more?
the vibration is speed related. the idler arm locates the relay rod. play in the idler arm means play in the relay rod. play in the relay rod means tie-rod ends can move.
I'm guessing the truck doesn't like bumps on the right side?

i'm certain you are right. first yota for me and first car where I'm trying to get in there and wrench. I'm picking up the bushing in a couple of days and swapping it out this weekend. If that bushing fixes it i will dance naked in the streets. Ever since I got this car i've had a lot of problems and I've replaced a lot of things so I am just expecting the worse at this point.

go to a tire shop for a balance and rotation. the place i went to told me they couldn't do it because my idler and pitmann arms were too loose and needed replaced. im pretty sure all that ever really needs to be replaced is the pitmann arm but i got "heavy duty" ones to replace both of them.

jack up your truck on one side, grab your wheel at 12 and 6 and push in and kinda move it around twards you. if it has any play in it and moves then you have some issues goin on. also feel for any vibrations while your moving it.

i noticed a huge improvement in the stability of my ride when i installed OME heavies and stiffs specially around the 60-70 range when previous to the lift it shook like a mofo at the same speeds...
