Need...More... Fuel...

I am going to try a fuel system upgrade in my supercharged doublecab and I have a few questions that I hope you folks can help me with.

First. Injectors...Which ones should I buy? Are they easy to install? Will the existing plugs match the ones on the new injectors? Will I need to install any electronic device to control them?

Second. What about an adjustable fuel management unit? I have read Gadget's write up about them, but I still don't quite understand. Is It necessary? Can I try Gadget's "free FMU" that is described in his site even with a second generation supercharger (Gadget has a first gen blower)?

Third. After all this maddness, will i need to replace my fuel pump or can the factory pump handle the load?

I have already read all the information on Gadget's site so please don't refer me there. I am looking for opinions from you guys that have attempted these kind of mods. You can never have too much information, right?

Thanks,
Noel

I bought 305cc injectors from a N/A Supra and an Apex'i S-AFC. I found that to be adequate for my needs/elevation.
As for the "free FMU." YES. do the free FMU. You'll need a short length of hose and about 20 minutes. (less time if you have smaller hands)
Fuel pump....I, personally, would wait. If you still experience insufficient fuel delivery, then add it. Until then, buy the injectors, AFC, and do the free FMU.

Alan, did you try it out with just the injectors before the S-AFC installation? And are you running the 2 step cooler plugs per the advice from TRD? I just ordered a set of NGK Iridiums.

Cool! Now we are getting somewhere. I knew you guys could help.

Now I have a few more questions....
What is a S-AFC? Where do I get one? How much is it?
Did you get the Supra injectors from the dealer? How much were they? Should I change to the cooler plugs? Will I need some kind of computer to operate the bigger injectors?

Now for the most important question of all...
Since my truck is only 5 months old...

WILL ANY OF THIS VOID MY WARANTEE???
WILL THE DEALER EVEN KNOW THAT I DID IT???

Thanks in advance for all the info. I finally feel as if I am getting somewhere.

Noel

By the way Haveblue, How are you making out with the stero situation?

First, let me Qualify my answers..I have a 2K 4Runner with almost 20K miles on the SC'r with no fuel mods.

When I asked Alan the injector question, I wasn't paying enough attention to his model year, he has a '96. Any ping I get is minor and minimal so I haven't done any fuel mods. The colder plugs may stop it completely.

The S-AFC controls the larger injectors, which most people get from a junk yard. TRD is recommending 2 step cooler plugs to minimize ping problems. They will supply you with NGK or Denso part numbers. The numbers I got from TRD were for NGK Platinums and Denso Iridiums. I emailed NGK and got the part number for the NGK Iridiums and ordered those.

According to the warranty info on TRD's site, any unauthorized fuel system or ignition system mods will void the warranty.

I suggest that you read it!

Oh, sorry, no cost info on the fuel mods because I haven't done the mods. I ordered the NGK Iridium plugs online from Monarch. $6.95 each plus shipping. Denso's are ~ $11 each.

Ron-
No, unfortunately I did not try the injectors alone before the S-AFC install. I actually tried it the other way around. (The injectors were in the mail and I had the AFC in hand so I got impatient and installed the AFC first)
I am not running cooler spark plugs, yet. However, I ordered the TRD thermostat last Friday. I did this for two reasons:
1) Hopefully it will reduce ping as they say it will
2) When off roading, hopefully it will keep my engine cooler!

Noel-
The Apex'i S-AFC can be purchased at any import tuning store. I bought mine locally for, but there are several websites that sell them. For pictures and general info, click here.
Here are a couple websites that sell them:
Options Auto Salon (e-mail them for a price quote)
NOPI online (rather pricey here, though)

I bought the injectors from TAP recycling They are pretty fast when you e-mail them for a quote. When I bought mine (over a year and a half ago), I paid $300 for the set.

As for the stereo, its being pieced together. I decided to go with Infinity speakers, 6 1/2s for the door (replace stock), 5 1/4s for the kick panels, and two Sony amps to power fronts and rears. I bought the speakers on the 'net just a couple days ago and the amps I'll buy locally (acutally a 60 mile drive).

CAN'T WAIT TO GET IT ALL TOGETHER!

And, yes, I'll definately post pics of the process and completion.

I will be installing the sAFC and 305cc injectors in the next couple of weeks on my 99 SC'd 4 Runner. I will let you know how much of a difference it makes. These will be the only fuel mods, so far, that I will have made.

cooler plugs

Tomus1000, I've got a supercharged Taco doublecab too. FYI, it is an '02. It seems to ping a little under mild acceleration. Pinging stops when the acceleration gets more aggressive. I noticed the ping after I changed to a TRD air filter. I wonder if that is an indication of running a bit lean? Will going to cooler plugs than stock help? Have you changed plugs? If so, what plug did you go to and how did it work?

Also, I have a post on the question of combining the deck plate mod with the supercharger. Although I'm still trying to figure that one out, it seems like its not a good idea unless you change the fuel delivery set-up.

Any thoughts, anybody?

what if you want mo power!!

HEY guys!!

I read gadgets site a while ago-- I got a 98 2x4 v6 stick shift with supercharger and lucas 370cc injectors, deckplate, SAFC, dual Supra in tank fuel pumps and let me tell ya...... its fast

IF you want to add more power later (upgrade SC pulley) youll need more fuel than the 305cc's can give you (and stock pump)and probably have to retune the SAFC to change your fuel map. I experimented with a 13psi pulley for my truck and it overboosted so much it backfired on pump gas---but, it peeled out at 1400rpm.

so I put the stuff back together and will have to live with 300HP:rolleyes: If anyone knows how to get serious power out of this engine let me know. PS, some of the gadget stuff does not apply to newer kits and or ECM's.

Duffdog,

You've responded to my posts recently about injector size, etc. and people, I think, have gotten a little annoyed at my constant posts on this same subject, but it seems to me that you are the only person around making 300rwhp, and the only person with 370cc injectors. I know most are running 305cc injectors, and if I'm not mistaken most of them are only pushing 215-240 hp. Would you mind telling me what you are currently running on your truck to get 300rwhp. I really want to know if I should get the 370cc injectors from RC Engineering, so I can tap into what seems to be a lot more hp. I would really like to hear your theories on how you came up with your combination, because most of what I've heard is that anything over 305cc injectors will or could cause hard starting problems. And, from what I've read of your posts, you don't have that problem right? Why do you think this is? Here's what I've already purchased, and I would like to here what you could recommend that I do on top of this if you have the time:

1) TRD Supercharger
2) Walbro 190 LPH Fuel Pump

I was planning on running 305cc injectors and SS FTC1-E, but I've been reading a lot of posts on Tacoma Territory about the stock ecu leaning out after anywhere from 45-90 seconds, which is after the computer relearns what's going on. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
