Unhappy getting 11 miles per galon on r22e 4runner(help) please

i just repair my 4runner (new pistons,head,cam shaft,) the whole nine yards,my runner it's a 1988 4cyl.r22e automatic,
i just put brand new spark plugs,cap,rotor,cables,and still not getting good gas milage, the only mod i did it's the gasket match(intake an head)i polished the intake a little(inside)also i open the intake a little(just behind the trottle boby,it was a kind of duct for the emission cast in to the intake...shave that a little!!!!!!!! cause it was blocking almost a 1/4 of the hole.and i have a "fitch"fuel catalytic
other than that...it's stock

Is your engine light on?

I am guessing that you are running in open loop or something is sending the computer a bad reading like your o2 sensor. You can test for open loop by jumping the diagnostic terminal with a paper clip. Check the timing it should be at 5deg. When you remove the paperclip it should advance, if it does not then you are in open loop.
In my sig is a link to FSMs they have pretty good trouble shooting guides and diagrams that show you where every thing goes.

1st - O2 sensor has to be REALLLY bad to throw the CEL. Just because the light isn't on doesn't mean your O2 is good, and as they fail, it seems to always make the engine run rich.

2nd - the paperclip just ensures the engine is at base timing. If the engine is warmed up, you won't see any difference.

The single biggest factor for MPG in my experience is tire pressure, and it's kinda amazing how much the cooler weather will affect it!

how does it sound, how does it idle, is it rough and jumpy inside the engine compartment, how's the throttle response, does it smoke? have you done a seafoam treatment to it/ this will also help clean out your CAT, if it has chunks in it... oh yeah, and those tires are huge, about 4 inches in diameter bigger than a 225/70 r 15, think of the extra weight, and rolling resistance- I'd say those are contributing 3 to 4mpg less than normal. At least. this is about the normal size of the oem tire

sorry,but i've been busy over the last week ....this is what i just replace
o2 sensor/cap and rotor/spark plugs and wires/re do the vacumm sistem/tires are in
40 psi....the light was on just in the morning (not any more)


i was thinking on changing gears but its xpensive 1,200 to do it.........but
what gear ratio would you guys recomend for those 31's
it's the truck i use to go to work 170 miles every day round trip( all freeway ) 65-70

I am assuming by the light you mean the check engine light. If so jump the diagnostic terminal and see if you can pull codes.

the code was --25
but i did found the problem (vacumm hose)
i went to work this morning and it fells better (minning power)
but mpg ...still the same
and i dont know what to do now
cause all vacumm hoses are good,,,all sensor also...and i am not getting codes anymore

dont forget to correct your mileage based on those 31's but it might only be a 10% difference

a 28 to 31 is a 10% difference in speedometer miles per hour.

so if you get 10 mpg with 31s and you traveled 60 miles on your odometer you actually traveled 66 on that 10 gallons bringing you up to only 11 mpg.

I think thats the way its done anyway. I am sure someone will chime in if I am wrong.

i live in ca. and the way i calculate the milage,it's on the money i put every morning on my way to work $40 dlls every morning x 5= 200 a week
and that was the whole point on getting a 4 cyl. !save some money!
and yep i love the little truck.

based on 2.85 a gallon I am figuring you are using 13mpg and thats without the tire size correction. should be about 14.5-15 with the tire size correction.
