How difficult is it to replace CV shafts?

Hey, I have an 06 tacoma, and I suspect someting is very wrong with the front drive system..It goes into both H4 and Lo4, but is noisy. When out of 4x4 it is still very noisy and rough. I also got an ABS warning light on. The truck has 87k miles, and I don't know the history.....it's used. Should I suspect the front CV shafts? If so, could I replace them myself? I have experience but have never done that swap. Thanks.

I jacked up the truck, and the left front wheel assembly is loose, it wobbles. It makes a grinding noise when rotated. Could a main nut be loose, could it be the bearings in the CV? Please any help would be great. I don't think I should drive it in this condition.

Sounds like you have a bad wheel hub....If its your CV's you would hear a popping or clunking noise when you turn the wheel.

Since its a 2006, it should still be under warranty. Its safe to drive, but I'd get it looked at soon if you don't know what you're doing.

Wheel bearing. Might be loose, might be bad, might be both. I would not drive on it, eventually the bearing will grenade and lock up that wheel. Which would be bad if it happened while you were driving. If the hub assembly is just loose then you can just tighten it up, but if you drive on it while it's loose youre gonna destroy the bearing.

I think is has to be the bearing. If I remove the brake caliper will the rotor then pull off? I want to try to repair it myself, since I would have to tow it to a shop. I saw the replacement bearing for $123 via Toyota parts on line.

You should get a service manual before diving in if you are new to mechanical work. Someone here might be able to point you toward a factory manual for your rig.

You could pick up a Haynes manual at any auto parts store, or search for an FSM online. It involves a little bit more than just removing the caliper and rotor....just depends on how mechanically inclined you are.

I had it towed in to Toyota, the hub was shot, the bearings were in pieces, the ABS sensor was damaged, and for a quick $1100, it is all back in place. I kept the damaged hub and bearings just for proof.....tech said that water or a severe impact could have started the downward spiral.
thanks for all of your advice, it is running great now. But my wallet is much slimmer.
