I've taken a look at the manual, but before I start hitting stuff with a hammer I'd like to get some input or know how.

The FSM says to put the inner shaft in a vice to hold it and then tap the inner race with a brass bar (don't have one, but i'm sure I could find something). I'm guessing that is the part inside the cage that they talk about in the FSM. I also see a snap ring that appears to be on the inner shaft. Do I remove this before trying to hit the inner race with a brass bar?

Just curious, if there is anything else holding it in besides friction, as that's what the fsm makes it sound like?

I believe I can get the rest if I can get some information on disassembly of the two shafts.

 

Why?

 

get tube the same size as the inner cage and do it that way it way easyer than pounding it with a hammer
put the axle in a tube and drop it on the ground

 

I figured I would clean the parts and then pack the inner axle with grease since it seems there isn't really much in there if any at all.

Do any snap rings need to be removed first?

WaskillyWabbit, do you suggest leaving it be? If so, should I try and pack some grease in there around it as it is (without taking it apart)?

 

X2 on the tube, I used some 2.5" square tubing but whatever size clears the inner axle and hits the outside of the bell of the birf. will work. And some tips, drop it on something hard li concrete. Asphalt, dirt and wood are not rigid enough. And put a rolled up rag in the bottom of the tube to protect the end of the splines on the shaft. And start with a low drop height and keep increasing until the inner shaft pops out.

 

So there doesn't need to be any snap rings removed prior to dropping it on the concrete? Just put the tube over it as it came out of the axle housing and then drop it to break them free? Just want to make sure I don't have to do anything to the birf before doing this. That way I'm not causing unecessary damage and beating the hell out of it for no reason. Thanks for all the suggests so far.

 

There is a spring clip inside the birf. on the outer end of the inner shaft. But the only way to get to it is with the birf. separated:

I might have been wrong when I did mine, but I did not see any reason to remove the birf, it all looked good. I just cleaned it all out real good in the parts cleaner, blew it out with air, and then repacked it through the bearings just you would with a wheel bearing. I hop that I did not do it wrong. But it did hold a lot of grease, So far I have packed about 1 1/4 of tube into the passenger side knuckle/birf, and still have to pack the wheel bearings and hub on that side.

A question I do have is what is the torque specs for the wiper seals bolts on the back of the knuckle I could not find it in the FSM or on here, so I just put them on there "kind of tight" to where the retainers were just starting to bend but the seals look good all the way around the ball. just seems to kind of weird that the fsm has good specs for everything but that.
