advanced timing issue

my friend has 85 x-cab 4wd sr5 with a 22re he advanced the timing a little it runs much better now but now when u step on the brakes it idles up and down cause the idle is a little higher than it use to be is there any way to fix that with out going back to stock timing

check the idle adjustment screw I have the same issue and found it backs itself out and gives the up and down idle you speak of I think teflon tape on it will hold it where it needs to stay I will let you know in a day or two.

its screwed in all the way is there some wire he can disconnect or re route a vacuum line

the first thing i think of is a vacuum leak. the brake booster would by where id check first then all the lines. maybe double check the timing. idk just thinking outloud.

if you set the idle to high on a 22re it will do the same thing some sort of sensor or something im just wondering if theirs some way to fool it to think its right

do you know what the idle is at? i mean timing, sorry. being a 85 xtra cab owner myself i wouldn't be suprised this could possibly a separate issue.

you no im not sure but the idle sits at around 1k what ever its set at it ripps now it sucked b4

this may be a stupid question but does he still have the diagnostic plug shorted? i dont remember what its called the one in the engine bay you have to short out to set the timing.

ok if we go back to stock setting what would be a good place to set the time with a header and full exhaust no cat

i would put it at 5-6 degrees with the test jumper in. mine is at 6 maybe 7 and idles at about 800 and starts right up. no cat new exhaust and k&n drop in filter.

ahh yea he didn't use a gun had no clue about the jumper the poor thing prob has 10 degrees on it

update he never knew about the timing jumper and it was way the hell off its now set at stock but theres still something wrong with the idle it's like at 1200 with the screw all the way down
