I feel like I'm doing something wrong when putting the crank pulley on my 22RE. I have the oil pump on, and with it I put the drive spline on the crankshaft. When I go to install the crank pulley, I get it started on, the gently tap it on until I can get the large pulley bolt in. when I crank the bolt I ony get about one turn on it before the crank wants to turn.

Is something not right? I am supposed to be putting the crank on with the pulley key in place, right?

Also, whats a good way to assure that the crank oil seal lip is not getting folded under in a spot?

And once I get it on, the torque spec is 116 lb. Can I just give it hell with an impact gun, or should I rig up some way of holding the pulley still? Thanks guys.

 

More than likely you are getting the shear pin cock eyed when sliding the pulley on. I have to use a screw driver to keep the shear pin flat as I slide the pulley on. A touch of oil on the crank will help.


I use a little "Blue Loctite" on the crank bolt, and use a 1/2'' impact to tighten, but would recommend going to FSM spec on torque.

 

after putting the pulley on, and taking it off a couple times, I figured out that the spline drive for the oil pump must not be in far enough. I don't want to wail on it with a hammer, but can't figure it out. How far past the opening of the oil pump housing is that spline drive supposed to be?

 

this may sound totally retarded but the first time i put my pulley back on i had similar problems. is your spline drive, for the oil pump, on backward? idk just shooting in the dark here. i worked on mine for about 30 min and got super frustrated, then figured out it was backward and it slid right in.

the drive spline should be first. then the oil pump. then the crank pulley. and when you torque the crank pulley to 116ftlbs. have someone put your truck in 4th gear and hold the brakes... then torque the bolt...(hopefully urs is manual).

 

idk why it matters unless the splines mess up the seal.
