I own a 1996 4runner limited w/ abs and rear locker. I hit a curb when I slid out during a rain storm. I have a pretty bad wobble on my rear driver's side axle? I switched the spare tire on and it's the same.

I am looking to buy the backing plate/axle shaft assembly from a junk yard.

I have the coding page from sonoran steel but... I am wondering..

I know it has to have abs and the 4.3 gears, but does it have to have the rear locker?
Which years will fit mine?
Any other advice, is this something a somewhat experienced diy-er can undertake?

AFAIK the axle shafts are all the same for 96-02 4Runners, and maybe Tacos of the same vintage. If you're just replacing the axle shaft on one side it won't matter what gears are in the diff. You will need one with ABS so it has the wheel sensor.
Make sure you replace the seal in your old axle housing before putting a new shaft in. And you might want to consider replacing the other seal while you're there.

How will the gears not matter??? and all years 96-02... how do you know this?? This crap is driving me crazy lol

 

I assumed you'll be keeping the 3rd member from your old axle and just replacing the inner shaft that goes from the diff to the wheel. If you're planning on replacing the entire rear axle then you'll need one form a 4Runnner, as the Taco ones have leaf springs. But even then if you get one with different gears you can still swap in the diff from your old axle.

And I'm not 100% sure all 96-02 are the same but they're definitely all the same length, and I haven't heard of any different spline patterns.

 

Hello I'm new here, sorry for bringing a old post back alive but I need some help...I have a 2000 4runner with 16" wheels. So I have a bad wheel bearing/shaft and was wondering if I can replace it with a shaft that came from a 96-00 4runner with 15" wheel?
