Brake Light Won't Go Out

On my 91 Toyota Pickup (2wd), once I've started the truck and released the parking brake, the brake light remains on. When I first noticed the problem, it would sometimes go out on its own after a little driving. Now it stays on permanently. Haynes manual doesn't seem to offer any advice - so I throw it up to y'all. Any clues or obvious things to check?

ahh it means something but i can't remember right off the top of my head. im pretty sure it means a charging problem or something similar

mine would stay on all the time also..replaced the alt(it was bad already), replaced coil and ignitor(i fried em on accident) then the light went off??

or your switch just could be messed up..

replace the switch and see what happens

Check your brake fluid level in the MC.

You are thinking brake light AND charge light...that means alt not charging.

my 91 was doing the same thing; I remove that stupid filter/strainer thing under the cap in the resivour, and the light went off

Its usually a fluid level problem or a bad sensor in the resevoir cap. Mine needed a new master cylinder to get mine to go off.

The fluid level is definitely fine.

Disconnecting the sensor seems like the next thing to try.

Rovers 1973 - Did you try disconnecting the fluid sensor before you replaced the master cylinder?

sometimes the fluid must be filled past the full line.

sometimes the sensor gets stuck so you need to jiggle it a little.

>barnswallow - no, because at the time my master needed replacing, but I lived with that damn light on for ages. After I put in the new master, bled everything etc, the light stopped staying on. And jay351 could be right, because I keep mine just above the full line too. Just try cleaning the cap and checking the connections on it etc, refill the resevoir, bleed the brakes a bit and see it that works first.
