are you a 5 spd or an auto. 4.88s will be fine in a 5 spd with 33s
get your vin # and use this chart..scroll down to vin section

unless im reading it wrong..if so you can always spin your rear wheel once and count driveshaft rotations..for example 4 full turns and almost a quarter drive shaft rotations to one wheel rotation would be 4.10 gears

I'm running 4.10's with 35's and it sucks. You can try www.justdifferentials.com for gears and lockers...But Id check with some of the guys on here like waskillywabbit first..I like keeping my business among e-friends

This is meant to help, not to confuse. Just so you are aware, the Tacomas and '96-02 Runners also have a 7.5" front diff, but it has reverse-cut gears. This diff is different than your front diff. Yours has a 7.5" diff w/ standard-cut gears. Your rear diff is called the 8" V6/Turbo diff.
Your RPMs will be about 5-800 higher at highway speeds if you go from 4.11s (guessing that's what you have now) to 5.29s. To give you an idea, my 4.88s made it so I do about 2700 RPMs @ 70 MPH in O/D. Not bad at all IMO. You'll lose a little bit of top-end speed, but well worth it for all the acceleration and torque you'll get back.
I say 4.88s if you're never going to get bigger tires. If you think you might, 5.29s for sure.
