Help with 1990 Toyota 4 runner Enginge Prob!

Hey guys i have a 1990 Toyota 4 runner, that is having some engine problems.
I think i may have blown a rod, as the engine oil was ran down to around to 3/4 to a quart. Its making a distinctive clinking noise, that almost sounds like something in the motor is hitting metal. It died twice on me yesterday, and it sounds like the engine is going to shoot shrapnel through the head gasket, is this sound like a broken rod?
The car has 192,500 miles and probably another 25k when the odometer wasn't working, i think its time for a rebuild.

Most of the engine has been fixed/new parts and the only thing we haven't done is a total rebuild. Just had a new clutch installed in May of 09 after having the clutch go out.

My question is if it is indeed a rod that has failed/broke is there any way to replace just that set of rods, or do you have to replace the whole engine block?

What would your guys recommendation be, and what do i need to do to get this fixed? Low on money, but don't want to skimp on parts.
Thanks for your future help... Rossi

You probably have a rod bearing problem and if its been run long like that, a rough crank as well. The rod will have to be resized and probably the crank turned in your rebuild. Thats if what you are hearing is a rod bearing. The only way to know is to pull it apart and see. Sounds like it using a lot of oil, so a rebuild might be in order at any rate....regards....Rick

The oil is from me not changing it, i know stupid....
It was ran down to under a quart, and that's when this all started. When we got the clutch replaced, i heard a faint but distinctive clinking noise, it was pretty mellow and i spaced it off. Then the oil was ran low, and the car died twice and it started making a very loud and not good sounding clinking noise, which im assuming is a broken rod... Correct me if i a wrong.
How much do you guys estimate this will cost, and if need be to do a full rebuild?

well search a little bit and theres at least 5-6 rebuild threads with estimated costs and what parts they used and the end results, but alas it does sound like you need a rebuild and to take out the crank and rods you have to take the motor out and take apart the bottom half anyway,so you might as well, if you do all that work without doing a full rebuild it would REALLY suck for something els to brake and you end up doing it anyway and have to do the work twice right?

4 or 6 cylinder?

Mights well just rebuild it totally
I just redid my 22re and have right around $1700 into it but that is with all new parts except the connecting rods and the block having every surface checked and milled where needed , cylinders boarded 20 over , align board for the brand new crank and full master rebuild kit with head bolts and both water and oil pumps.

I did the work myself so there was no mechanic bill all the info I found here on this board and have never done one of these till this build.

Does anyone know a good shop in Washington state that does engine rebuilds or engine swaps.
I keep hearing about a guy in Moses lake, anyone else know anything about him? I'm pretty sure its a rod knock, and i want to do a engine rebuild at the same time.
I found a master engine kit from engnbldr.com that will cost around 300 bucks, and i want to get the head remachined. Anyone know of any shops that do machining on blocks that are reliable and decent priced in the WA area?

Man i don't want to be mean or nothing don't take this the wrong way but its the truth. You need to learn to keep track of your vehicles fluids. Toyotas love oil. If you starve a toyota of oil she will let you know. You must change it every 3-5k miles. and it must stay full all the time. If you don't you will get issues. Next time you will keep track of oil i'm sure. Toyotas will run forever as long as you keep it off red line all the time and keep oil in it and changed. OIL! OIL! OIL! OIL! Without it engine=no good. It sounds to me like a spun rod bearing but theres no telling unless i hear it. OIL CHANGE! OIL! OIL! OIL!
