Hi all.

New here.. don't own a 4runner or truck yet have been DDing Ae86s for years now though. However it has recently come to my attention that for 25 years I've lived a stones throw from the ocean.. and for 25 years I've never had a boat. this seems stupid.

So I'm trying to gather info on a good boat and tow vehicle combo. What I would be looking at is a 14-16' boat and trailer nothing to big. I was thinking a 4 runner to tow it with. However I still need to commute 40min each way every morning so the 3vz doesn't seem very appealing on top of the fact I can;t stand its power delivery and HG issues. So I was thinking 22RE but I really don;t know much about the 22R trucks.

Are the brakes the same size as the V6 and what are the tow capacities for each truck? I'm not sure what a boat and trailer weigh so I'm GUESSING around 2000 pounds? that could be on the high end though as I'm looking for an older boat, like a mid late 70 sankster or something.

So any info that may pertain to this would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to avoid the V6 and the tacoma is way out of my price range. I found a 93 22RE 4 runner for 1000 needing a head gasket. Seems in good shape and the HG on a 4 cyl is no big deal.

My truck is a 90 reg. cab 4x4 with 31x10.50s and 4.10 gears. I pull a 14' fiberglass river boat with a 40hp Mariner, from time to time. My 22RE has no problem doing it. The biggest boat I've ever pulled with my truck was 22' center console with a 200 on it. Although I only pulled it down the street to my friends house, my truck had a bit of a hard time doing it.

 

i got a 90 pickup with a 22re with 4.10s manual tranny. i have an exhaust and no cat, cold air intake, electric cooling fan, and 31's. i have towed a 20foot boat fairly easily and a 26 foot travel trailer but that was pushing it. if your not in a huge hurry just keep it in 3rd and 4th and you should do ok as long as your truck stays cool while your towing

 

I blew 2 engines pulling a 2500lb'ish boat with mine before I finally gave up and got a newer truck to pull with. Do yourself a favor and don't bother with a 22re. The boat I have now weighs closer to 4000lbs, and I pull it with the V8 4runner and sometimes I forget it's even back there.

Just get yourself a decent full size and you'll be glad you did.

Let me get this straight, you are looking for a truck with less power to tow something??? You make absolutely no sense. This is the first time I am hearing the a 3vz makes to much power for somebody. Vierd

 

dude the 22re is a good motor but by no means is it a power house. its around 90-100hp. and you said that you dont want the 3.0 because of the HG but pullin to much weight with the 4banger your ganna end up blowin a HG anyway. plenty of people pull heavy thangs with it but its not on a regular basis. I think if you get a 22re, drop gears or somethin

 

thanks for the info everyone. I ended up picking the truck up last night, it was in great condition no rust so for the price I figured I couldn't really go wrong. as for the boat I found a nice little 14 footer with an aluminum trailer. the whole setup is only around 1500 pounds.

Bamf I never said the 3VC has to much power, I said I don't like how it puts the power down. I've driven enough v6 trucks/4runner and I have always found the trucks feel as though they are geared to tall.

I'm also not looking for a truck with less power to tow.. I'm looking for a good daily driver that is still able to tow from time to time. Good DD to me includes gas mileage as my girl friend will be driving this to and from school, being a student she's funds limited and I don't want her to be forced to fill a gas hungry V6 if she doesn't have to.

So no. I was not born stupid and no I'm not a complete moron. I was merely weighing all my options and gathering all the info I could before jumping into something that would not fit my needs.

 

If you are not towing the boat every day ( who does ) the 22re should keep you happy. They are not fast, but one of the most dependable engines I have ever had. Gears help big time. It also depends on how far of a stone throw the ocean is I guess

 

I'd throw in a set of lower gears from an automatic truck. You probably have 4.10s now, so throw in some 4.56s if you have the 5spd and 235/75r15s or 4.88s if you have 31" tires. It won't be fast, but it should work.

 

My truck approx. weighs 2450lbs. Do you have a pic? Is it 2wd? The major problem I had with 2wd trucks is spinning a tire going up the boat ramp. Now I have a locker and aggressive tires and never spin a tire...tires LOL.

Anyway, I want to see what it looks like.

Whoa! That's light. Is that really the curb weigh? My truck weighs in at about 5200lbs when its loaded up for a fishing trip (which is about half the time I am driving it). Your truck towing its twin still wouldn't weigh what mine does. I didn't realize the weight differences were that dramatic.

I have noticed that adding ~500lbs doesn't have that much effect on the perceived weight of the truck. In fact, I have no trouble cruising at 95mph with a 10 foot tin boat strapped to the roof loaded to the gunnels with a fishing buddies, gear, camping stuff, coolers, beer etc.

 

You'd be surprized what those 22re's can haul.

My girls 4runner was loaded with 3 people, full of crap from costco and towing a 20ft bayliner...

did I mention it has 4.10's and 31's

 

Is this thing a 2wd or 4wd auto or 5spd?

In doing the head also put a cam in and increase the exhaust. Will help out a bit and is worth the few bucks.

I agree with Matt, if you going to be towing and it's an auto I'd gear it. A 5spd you might be alright with as long as you keep the stock tires.

My pickup does well with 31/s but I don't have the weight of the 4runner and I don't really tow, I haul wood and she does alright.
