FOUND SOME 488s!!
I found a guy wanting to sell a set of 488 thirds out of a 94 4cyl. he said the gears are brand new. one set is still in the box and the other is instaled in the rear already. He is asking for 500 for both after he installs the front gears. Or he said 450 if i give him my old v6 410s.
50 bucks for both thirds doesnt sound like much of a deal on my end lol. so i mite end up just keeping them.
Back to my point, does 500 sound like a bit much for front and rear thirds with 488s, NO lockers, and the seller is installing the gears himself.?
By the way... it would be a 12 hour drive ($120 in gas) both ways to pick them up so what would be the best way to handle that situation?

Most salvage places list stock rear 3rd for $300+... so keep yours..Id do some figuring to see if you could come out cheaper than $620 by just buying gears and having them installed..is there any difference in 4 cyl 3rds and V6 thirds?

yeah 2 pinion carrier vs 4. and different bearing sizes. the bearings should be an easy swap though (are they)
buying gears is a good idea but probably wont be much cheaper. plus if i swap in the 4cyl diffs i can run aussie lockers right?

If the 4.88 gears are a reputable brand, and the installer knows what he is doing, then I think $500 is a pretty fair price. The biggest concern would be in whether or not the guy knows how to properly set up the gears.
Although $50 might not seem much for your stock thirds, I'd take it. They don't seem to sell very well whenever they come up on here or other forums.

UUUGGGHHHHHH!!!!!! im ready to say the heck with it and let it pass till i figure everything out for sure because i keep hearing different things...
this is what i have found- http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/#front
this says: '86-95 IFS trucks and 4Runners use a 7.5" front diff that is offset to the passenger's side.
and for the rear we know both are 8" but the 4cyl is 2 pinion and the V6 is 4
Can yall please read that link over and try to help figure this out!!??
Im sure there is a few of you on here that knows the exact answer.

Okay, the gears are Precision Gears. And it turns out the thirds are out of a '94 (meaning it was ifs) so the front is 7.5 and the rear is 8. with that being said, everything should matchup right?
Please help me figure this out I am almost there!!! lol

Here's a writeup on the front. http://gearinstalls.com/ifs.htm Taking it down is pretty easy. Putting it back up is a major pain. I'd recommend using a tranny jack.
Here's a writeup for the rear. It's a lot easier than the front https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f129...nstall-163698/

taking 89s advice
Hey, i located some factory 488s out of a 94 runner just now. the place wants 350 just for the rear and probably the same for the front too.
Should i gamble and try to save some by going with a 4cyl diff that had the gears set up by joe schmo or pay some bigger bucks and go with the yota factorys?
i mean 600-700 is alot to fork over for me but i was never much of a gambler either.
i think im just rambling now but seem to have made my mind upbut wanna make sure... again
so is 600-700 too much for front and rear factory 488s in "excellent condition"
thats about what i would pay to buy 2 sets of R&Ps and labor right?

6-700 is alot for just factory thirds. I got my e-locker third set up with new 4.88's and a factory 4.88 ifs front for roughly 700. That is cheaper than gettin new gears set up at a regular shop. In the end it comes down to your budget, what you want to spend, and whether or not you want to put a locker in the rear down the road.
