Talking Welding Fabrication Multi-purpose Table

Been needing a new multi-pupose table for a while now and since steel is way down to normal prices, I picked up some steel and started my table.

2"x2"x1/8" angle - bracing
(6) 36" pieces
(6) 84" pieces
(3) 32" pieces
(8) 36" pieces for shelf braces
2"x2"x1/8" tubing - columns
(6) 40" pieces
1/2"x48"x96" plate - top
3/4" x #9 expanded metal shelves
500 lb casters

I only have little 2" squares of drop from where I notched the expanded metal and the angle. Very little waste in building this table...that's the way I planned it out.

Right now just a frame, 36" W x 84" L x 40" H

Final weight will be right at 1125 lbs

Actualy the top plate will weigh 650 lbs. Just pick it up and set it right on the frame since I got 6 inches each side so we don't mash any fingers. (4) people, one on each corner, should be pretty easy.

40x40 shop space...makes it fun to work on stuff for sure.

Looks great!, but if your friends are anything like mine they won't be anywhere near you when you need to move that 650lb top. Then you'll need to do it all by yourself!

Yep, it is better. Been modifying things I do so not to stress it...like a TALLER work table at the shop.

Gotta have cool stuff to make cool stuff.

I've looked at it a couple times.

Yep, I got one on my other door too and the fridge. Stickers make the world go round.

Got my casters almost welded on last night but my welder took a dive...needs a new liner...gets here tomorrow...and I got my "shelving" ready to go on tomorrow night/Saturday in and among all the other projects for the weekend.

I hope to be done by mid next week when I add the 1/2" top.

It is the perfect height for me with the casters...makes it easy on the old back to weld.

All I have left to do is put on the 4'x8'x1/2" top

Shelves are 2" angle bracing with 3/4 x #9 expanded metal.

Casters are welded onto 1/4" plate and then welded to the frame (centered on leg)

The caster plates stick out but it won't matter as the top will be overhang 6" all the way around so you'll never get into the caster plates.

sweet man. iv been wanting to build a nice welding table for a while now. it gets annoying having to have the wife or nearest buddy do fire watch so i dont burn up the wood workbench lol .. but looks like i gotta wait till we move.. wich probably wont be for a year or so.

ps i really like the expanded steel shelfs, saves weight and adds more function to the bench.

Got the top on tonight. Still got to massage it another 1/2" one way before welding it on and need someone heavy to stand on it so I can get it flat to weld...but it is real close now.

The Hi-Lift is 48" in the picture.

Going to radius the corners as they have a bite to them now, already bit me twice, and the cut edge is rough to so I'll be cleaning it up with a flapper wheel all the way around. Add a vise or two, some tubing to hang grinders and welders on, other doo dads as necessary to make things easier for me to find, do, and weld. I have really enjoyed this project more than I thought I would and look forward to using my new table for a loooong time.

Corners and edges rounded. Vise installed and braced underside.

I also moved the 85 project on the new dollies on the jack stands and worked like a charm.

Next weekend the shop floor will get a new look too.
