trouble shifting my 79 / need 5sp

I have a 79 yota pickup that I've been woking on for a while. Its very dificult to get into 1st gear after stoping, only will go if im rolling.

I havent yet replaced the transmission fluid or really even done anything to the trany since I got it but I wanted to know if theres anything in particular that I should look for if my transmission was getting ready to break.

Also, anyone know a place I can buy a cheapish 5sp and power steering. for my 79 pickup?

ANOTHER question, I just got 33" toyo m/d tires, will stock gearing move these? I have 3" rough country suspension lift.

Odd seeing as my 82 is the exact opposite, can't put it in first while moving, have to be stopped.

Anyway, I think the junkyard would be your best bet unless you're willing to shell out the cash for a rebuilt marlin crawler unit. Last I heard P/S was a junkyard find.

IIRC, Stock gearing will move 33's but regearing would be beneficial in the long run.

check to make sure your clutch is adjusted right/ fluid good, full. give it a quick bleed aswell.
you can always adjust the pedal throw under the dash aswell

ok, thanks. I'll check my local junkyards for p/s and as far as my tranny goes, I"m gonna get new fluid for it and check it all out.

Its a real pain having to remember to put it into first before comming to a stop sign and stuff.

If you shift it into a higher gear like second, then shift into first it will usually work. this only happens once the truck has been running for 10 or so minuets and begins to heat up, it works perfect the first time I go into first.

Check craigslist, too. Cheaper than junkyards. 33" tires will make your truck very slow, and will kill your transmission. So if you go that high, definitely start saving for a tranny right away. From what I've heard, the 4 speeds react worse to oversize tires than the 5 speeds, but all the trannys from those 79-83 models were a bit weak. I think regearing might take some strain off the tranny, and with 33's it's not a bad idea to regear anyways.

I ran 33" Toyo's on my '81 for a while...decent running 22R pulled it OK...you would love 4.88's better...I traded the 33's for a set of 35" Toyo's and ordered 5.29's a few days later

If it is still the stock L Series I would be checking your case periodically--not the strongest one out there
