rod bearing repair or engine replacement?

I have a 1988 toyota 4runner that has a rod bearing(s) going out. A shop quoted me $850.00 for the rod bearing repair-that is if he doesnt have to pull the engine. My question is should I attempt to re-build the current engine or build another and swap? I have heard horror stories of buying a re-built 22re, things like companies forgetting to put in seals and things of that sort. So i assume to start with a block and go from there, if anyone has any advice i would really appreciate it. Thanks for your time. -Eric
