Exclamation Oil Pressure!! Won't Hardly Build,, BIG problem!

So i recently replaced my timing chain on my 85 22RE with no problems. But now my truck wont build up oil pressure over the first quarter mark, the oil pump looks fine and im running 10w-30. Truck tends to want to bog out while coasting to try to stall. COULD IT BE THE ROD BEARINGS? I need help diagnoising this issue i would greatly aprreciate it!

Update 7-18-09- Still havent figured it out, took out sending unit sprayed it with brake cleaner. Changed oil filter, running 10w-40. Lots of metal flake in Oil

What else did you get into when you did the timing chain? And ya the pump maybe shot.

Hmm well I've seen a 22r leak oil from one of the high pressure passages that goes through the passenger side of the timing cover but it leaked to the outside. I think it could also leak to the inside so you would not know there was a leak but your oil pressure would drop. Hope that makes sense! Basically the high pressure oil from the pump runs through the timing cover on it's way back to the the block and the timing cover gasket seals this passage. Also did you remove the oil pan and clean out the bottom and the pickup screen when you changed the timing chain?

Well I learned something tonight...I did not realize that the timing cover housed the high pressure oil. Good to know.

TrevanO It could be the problem. I would definately drop the oil pan and check. It's just a bunch of 12mm head bolts to undo then pry the pan off carefully. Usually the pan is stuck on pretty good by the gasket glue. You can also remove the pickup while the pans off and clean it real good. I would do this first then if that does not fix it you might be having to pull the timing cover to repace the gasket. Good luck! Report back what you find!

Lumpy The timing cover houses the oil pump and the passages feed the oil back into the block...so yes there is definately high pressure oil in there!

The oil pickup is underneath the oil pan. When you remove the pan it will be hanging right there below the crank. It is held on by 3 bolts.

Another thing. When you put the oil pan back on you don't have to use a gasket. Just go to Toyota and ask for a tube of black Form in place gasket (FIPG) then smear a thin layer on the oil pan sealing surface and a layer on the block mating surface then bolt the pan back on. My nephew and I just dropped the oil pan on his 85 truck 2 weeks ago cause it was leaking and the Toyota FIPG worked great to seal it up.

slabkrawler thanks for all your help. Today i dropped the pan found chunks of timing chain guide in the bottom of the pan, cleaned it out followed by cleaning the pickup. i Put slick 50 and 10w-40 in the crankcase but still getting low pressure. I think it might be the oil pump, what do you think??

That good that you got all the stuff out of the pan. Yes next check the pump. You can order a new one from Engnbldr for like 50 bucks. Just how low is the oil pressure? Does it only drop at idle? It seems strange that it would start doing it after you replaced the timing chain?? That was why I was thinking it was the timing cover gasket or junk in the pan blocking the pickup. Make sure that the surface of the timing cover which the oil pump rides against is not worn. I have seen that be a problem on some motors I've built. It was fine prior to changing the timing chain right? So the gage or sending unit should not be the problem?? I'd check them also if the pump looks good. Does the moto still run crappy? Does it sound like there is low oil pressure? Knocking or rattling sounds?? Typically if the OP is low the timing chain will make a lot of noise at idle cause the timing chain tensioner won't be working.

Does it knock some when you crank it up for just a few seconds and then it's fine afterwards?

Actually i have a similar problem. well when i bought my truck about 1500 miles ago i changed the oil. then two days ago i checked the oil and the dip stick wasnt even a little bit wet . so i was pretty shcked. i decided to drain the oil to c how much was actually left in there and there was aconsiderable amount still in there about 4.5 qts id say. so i put 5 qts of new oil in there and it reads low.

so my question is how may qts does it take 6? cuz i only put 5 so maybe that was my initial problem. but even so i dnt get why the dip stick would show me its dry when it has so much oil in it still

im plannin to go to autozone and buy another quart in a bit cuz the oil reads low.... even though i just put in 5 quarts 2 days ago....

gameover, 4 quarts fill a 22re. Not sure what the problem could be, does your dipstick go all the way in to the pull gaurd? if it noticably sticks out and isnt hitting near the bottom pan you wont get a good read.
