Question Noobie Question of the Day "What is the ETC Button"?

We have this say, button, on my console of my FJ80 and it says 'ETC'.

The button is defunct because we had purchased a LAME car freshener once that clips onto your vent? Well, the airfreshener which was liquid SPILLED onto the dash there and literally melted the plastic around the sides of our mysterious 'ETC' Button so it does not press in.

I looked through my users manual and there is no mention as to WHAT this button even does, so it sits there and stares at us.

I always pretend that it's the one button that shifts my car into it's transformer stage and turns into this protecting robot that takes me places and watches the kids while I take a bath, etc..... O_o ..... who knows?

Well, I dont have an option! The position its in is the position it's in.. but THANK YOU!!!

Would there be a notification light on the dash saying it's engaged, you think? Or is it stuck permanently in it's off position?

ECT stands for 'Electronically Controlled Transmission'. It changes the transmission shift points, with the button pushed in it's in "Sport" mode. That keeps the transmission in lower gears longer for a bit quicker acceleration.

Mine is in to turn it on and out is off. There is a green light on my dash which say ECT POWER, or something like that when I push the button in.

I usually call it extremely cool turbo, although it has nothing to do with a turbo.
Its helpful when going up long hills though

I thought it stood for Extra Caged-gerbil Treats... it dishes out more food pellets for the gerbils running on the wheel under the hood.

you could try thin metal strips between the gaps to free it.
...dunno of any way to reverse the damage.

Ha ha ha. I wish. Wheelin sure we be a lot more fun. I would just duct tape the button down.

I usually use a really small screw driver (the ones you never use) and just slowly work on the difficult spots all around it. Sometimes they have small tabs on the back that don't want to let go.
