What do you do before you start a critical change?

I have a question regarding starting a job on a car...
What do you ABSOLUTELY DO before you start working on a part of your only working vehicle that is critical?

Do you make sure you have all the parts you need... all the tools you need?
OR do you USUALLY end up finding out that you are missing key parts, and/or tools and are stranded until you can find a ride to go get it, or until the store opens again in a few days?

And here is the BIG KICKER.... Has anyone EVER started a critical job not knowing where their chuck key is????

I'm just wondering if this is just my voice of reason taking over or if I really have a reason to give my husband a Darwin award for taking out a vital working part of my car that absolutely needs his drill/electrical tool for without knowing where the chuck key is....

Please, put me in my place before I make a fool of myself, but to me.. it's sort of a no-brainer.

I like to have all the parts, and all the tools. I usually do. But sometimes I break more things in the process of fixing another

Sounds like it's time to buy a keyless chuck drill...?

Yes, before I start "critical" or any job I try to make sure I have everything I might need. 80% of the time I have 90% of what I needed...lol!!

Depends on the individual I suppose.

I have all the tools I need but if I know I'll need another for a task, I simply buy it as I will need it again eventually.

Only "drill" that requires a "chuck" is a drill press and the "chuck" always stays in its place.

Your husband needs to learn a simple phrase "Yes dear". He will live longer...and it will be more peaceful.

Me, I just have my shop away from my house.

*sigh*

Yeah, Jay is a notorious thread-stripper. I have been listening to him out there for the past 3 hours with the drill.. probably the EXACT SAME BIT he started with trying to make do.

He comes RUNNING INTO the house demanding I find him this missing Chuck Key and that otherwise my car is useless and all I can think of is... why now?

It's 8:30 is Sears still open? I can probably walk there still and get him a keyless drill/screwdriver....?

Well, honestly Im one of those RARE layed back wives who only really freak out after the close call, a good laugh, and a few hours have passed. But we're talking about our only family vehicle and it's not like we can just go.. rent one cheaply for a day or two. We have 7 people in our home!

He's installing the front driving stabalizer that came with my Old Man Emu lift kit and he bent his ball puller so he's DRILLING out the frozen ball joint manually. We're hoping that this stabalizer will help my steering- when I drive with these bigger tires and new lift the car drift from side to side easily and the steering shakes a bit when you apply the brakes. Might be the rotors, but not sure.

I'm just... I just think it's ODD he started this with no way to change bits.

Ok. This is good to know, I would much rather give him the benefit of the doubt than send him to hell. We all make mistakes and that's why I was second guessing my sheer confusion as why we're having this issue, hahahaha *snort!*

I dont mean to correct the master, but, an older corded, or even some newer corded drills have chucks, not just a drill press. Dont kill me please.

Yeah, laugh it up. My boys call it the "spider tool".. but he bent it and couldn't get the ball joint out. Honestly, I think he just likes drilling things out of things...
