Bumpstop rusted off, trapped in coil spring...help (pic)

(1992 4Runner)

So...while back went up a trail (North Fork Reservoir by Shavano) and heard a rattling the whole way up. I thought it was just my loose muffler, so I screwed it to its (rusted) bracket when I got back. But the rattle has returned, with a vengeance, so I took a closer look and saw this:



As you can see, it just rusted right off the "cone" that it was attached to.

My 4Runner is stock (I like it that way) and I really don't have much experience with suspensions, so I would really appreciate some help here. I put Trailmaster SSV's on the front, and love 'em, I am getting some for the back but need to take care of this first.

Is that "cone" a replaceable part? As in, bolt a new/junkyard replacement right back on? Or is this gonna be a welding job?

I can't believe I didn't notice this sooner, kind of embarrassing but I haven't really noticed any difference in the ride - just that the rattling is HUGE now. Maybe it got stuck up in that cavity for a while?? Who knows.

I know Sonoran Steel makes a stop like this:
but that is for 1996-2002. What do you think?

Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

Deff looks to me like a welding job..

I wouldnt flex out the suspension if I were you cause if ya do and over compress that spring its ruined..

Hey man, thanks for the reply.

Nice head's up about the spring too, I am going near Steamboat next week and wanted to mess around a little, but now I guess not. Spring might be shot by now anyway...

On the other hand, I might as well tear it up a bit if I'm riding on junk that's gonna be replaced, right? Hmmm

Yeah, time for something! Whoops.

LC coils are gonna give me a lift though, right? Sounds like an expensive slippery slope right there, I hear once you get started with all of that its hard to stop.

How about some jury rig options? My wallet doesn't have any problems with junk yard parts.

Also, I researched this a little bit and came across a guy who put airbags in the coils, but this also sounds expensive: here is the link:

I have the same issue. I would like to see if there are some aftermarket options out their for replacement that require little modification.

My bumpstop broke off when I was putting on my new springs. Rusted just like yours. I just welded it back in place. If you want to pull it out, you might try jacking up that side of the 4Runner to have the spring relax enough to pull it through.

Both will give you lift. 901s will list about 2'', LC coils will lift it about 4''.

Search for 901s, i like em more then the LC ones. good luck.

If you want to pull it out, you might try jacking up that side of the 4Runner to have the spring relax enough to pull it through.
Ardent: that right there sounds like a plan. Maybe there are some scientists here who can verify that a compressed spring will amplify sound? The noise just seems really loud to me considering the small amount of steel on the rubber that is actually hitting the coil. This is one noise I can't ignore by turning the music up.

Before I read the new posts I had been brainstorming: lets say 1) I were to take an angle grinder and cut off the part of the "cone" that is bent in, so it is flat. 2) attach a bolt to the center of a piece of 1/4" steel plate (or whatever) 3)weld the plate to the cone and reattach the old bumpstop to this bolt/plate.

However, I like the idea of just welding it right back on. I have welded a few chainlink fence gates at work, not the prettiest but they held. Is my idea just me over-thinking a simple solution?

Tubbyfatty: Thanks for the tips! I don't know if I am ready to lift this thing yet, maybe a good middle ground would be something like KVRunner's 33's on stock, my 31's are looking smaller everyday.

personally.

I dislike the LC coils. I ran them and just got them off my truck.

They were WAY too soft in my opinion.

No prob. Yea i dont really want to lift mine that high either. But im going to go with the set up this guy has. I believe he only has 31s.

Weld it back on. Both mine on my 91 fell off. I wouldn't go overboard with the welds either.

I guess i will deal with that when i put my ome springs in. I thought about welding the bumpstop to a plate and bolting or welding the plate to the frame.

The general consensus I'm getting is that I'm cool for now, and I should maybe take it easy until I get a chance to just weld that thing right back on. Thanks for all the help, I'll probably put a pic up of the weld when I get back.

But hey just for fun, can anyone verify that this is the original, stock Toyota shock?

Yeah, I'd leave it off until you put the new springs on. It will make it much easier to get them on!

I wouldn't sweat it either. My is still in the coil spring loose,just like yours,and it's been that way for about 5 years now.
Up at the top,where it seats in...the metal rotted away and the stop just fell out.
I don't off road mine,ever and it's all stock.
I do load my rig down with heavy music equipment,but it never bottoms out.
if it's just a DD,I wouldn't sweat it. if you off road...Might be best to replace it.
