Anyone know what it should cost for me to buy and have gears installed??? Any suggestions? I live in Atlanta, GA. I want 4.88's for the front and rear. I got an estimate yesterday and I seem to think it is a little high. ($1423)

 

F&R, just buy new 3rd members. The rear will cost you about $425, don't know about the front, but guessing the same. Add on lockers and up the price. For that price you could be able to buy a locked rear and an open front, both at 4.88.

 

It really depends on what all you want or need to get.

Brand new Precision Gears front and rear plus master install kits should be in the $600 range.

If you take your truck in somewhere drive in, drive out service, then you should be looking at around $400 in the rear and probably $600 in the front.

If you take the thirds into a place, then you should be looking at $200 per diff.

I paid $1150 for my Precision geared ARB'd rear diff with V-6 gears, sold my old one and slapped in the new one myself.

Locker prices will be just for materials in essence sense you are getting new gears.

Detroit should be $400
ARB should be $600
Lock-Right and similar should be $200

Depending on the shop, $1500 for drive in, drive out regearing all inclusive parts and labor is pretty stellar.

 

when i blew my rear diff i did a lot researching and askin around to lots of 4wd stores... big ones like 4WDP and lil custom 4x4 shops. The custom shops recommended against the Precision gears that 4WDP sells. So i went to a small shop that my friend knows. The rear gears at 456 were $200 plus $200 install with me bringing the diff into the shop.

Now my front is blown so i need to replace that. i called the shop again and asked them howmuch and they said itd be about the same if i brought the front diff in. but im buying a stock 456 diff front a fellow yotatechie instead!

4 Wheel Parts sells Genuine Gears with a lifetime warranty that are generally agreed to be crap and definitely subpar.

Precision Gears is agreed to be one of the better, if not the best gear other than stock Toyota. These are not sold by 4 Wheel Parts.

Either you mistyped or that shop was misinformed.

If the diffs are old, you ought to get new bearings, which are included as part of a master install kit, and are not cheap. IIRC, at the very least, you will need a new pinion bearing, that that could be a clouded mind.

 

thanks guys. I found a guy that will install them for $525 a set. That's $525 for the front and $525 for the rear.(that includes the gears and a master install kit. What do ya'll think? Oh, and how is $1111.44 for mickey thompson classic 2's and bfg at's(35x 12.50)? it's the cheapest i could find. now, all i have to do is make sure that the body lift i have will fit my truck and i will be in business. thanks again.

 

where did you go in atl to get them done? i need to get some new gears and dont want to spend an outrageous amt of money. also, where in atl are you at ????

$1423 is way high, def shop around for a better deal

 

Shop around on the tires...... I was quoted $845 out the door for a set of Goodyear MT/Rs: 35x12.50x15. I believe they are even cheaper at Walmart too. BFG AT's are cheaper than Goodyear MT/R's.

I called a guy that Precision gear recomended in my area. I'm taking him my thirds. He actually lives like 5 minutes from me. I live in Powder Springs, GA. If you need some more info about him, just PM me. He's done a LOT of Toyotas.

 

Who quoted you that price?(if you don't mind me asking) And was that with wheels mounted and balanced? I want the Mickey THompson Classic II's.
