Santa Rosa Mountain--Points of interest
My daughters and I are going camping and hiking up to Toro Peak this weekend. Does anybody have any suggestions on things to see or side trips in the area? Preferrably on the mountain or within 5 miles of the road at the bottom.
If you are nearby and want to come with or meet up, contact me.
By the way my daughters are 20 and 21. Not babies.

Well heres a map of what I see

Here's the google earth map with all the way points. Dirtopia is telling me the mountain stretches into the north east side of anza and as you can You can see the proximity of the slaton sea and all that good stuff with the mountain and compare that with the Google earth file, There's some great wheeling nearby to be had

I highly reccomend going to your local ORW and picking up this book

In it there's at least 10 trails listed in the anza area with everything to mild or wild, If I can make it out there well have to find a good trail to hit up..

I know that area south of Santa Rosa Mountain pretty well but thats another trip altogether.
I'd be glad to share my knowledge of the ABDSP with you or do a trip out there someday but I am looking for something different to show my kids.
We've been out to the desert a bunch already this year but I've only been up camping on the S.R. Mtn a couple of times before. June is the best time to go there. There is a spring up there too so you don't even have to bring any water just empty bottles.
Does anybody know if they still post a No Trespassing sign on the gate leading to the towers at the summit?

Scuba if you follow this link you will see how many miles away from the good wheeling we will be. As the crow flies its pretty close but its far from a straight shot.

I am planning on staying in the same camping spot for both nights. Looking for stuff nearby.

Yeah I'm dirt poor right now too. That another reason I'm not going that far into the desert. It would be close to an extra tank of gas to get there and back plus wheeling.
From my house to the camp area is about 72 miles. Where is the last gas I can get on my though Temecula going east?

Thats alright I'll get it in Temecula. As of tommorow, I won't be as broke as I thought I would be. So wheeling on Sunday isn't out of the question. I like to play it by ear. We could pack up early Sunday and maybe cut through the desert east of the Salton Sea. Come back through Julian.

Thats cool. Its not a big deal. Just a little camping and relaxing. Maybe for Father's Day my kids will treat me to all the cooking and cleaning so I can just chill or wander around.
I want to get to the top even if there is a no trespassing sign up there.

Yeah I'd like to check that area out someday too. Its about 125 miles from where we were this past weekend though. I'd go in the cooler months. I've hear that some of the tunnels have caved in and I don't think they have restored the tracks to a useable condition. I think it was just an idea that never went through.
This map shows the relation of the bridge to where we were.

In this picture you can see the ABDSP to the south of us and Clark Dry Lake is the large flat area.
