So i've got two 1995 4runners, one with a blown headgasket and the other a spun bearing.

A few things:

How do you get the damn p/s pump off. The gear gets in the way to pull out the 14mm holding it in.

And in regards to the rod bearing:

Is it possible to pull the oil pan and replace bearings without pulling the engine? I saw in another thread someone had the idea but no one said whether or not it was possible / worked.

You can unbolt the whole PS pump bracket and remove it with the pump still attached or you can remove the pulley and the pump bolts will come off. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...riteup-183622/

 

The pulley's impossible to take off. I just took off the whole bracket.

As far as the rod bearing project: Does anyone have experience with replacing bearings with it still in the car? I looked at the FSM and all their illustrations have them being replaced with the crank still in place (be it on a stand however). I'm 85% sure its possible, i'm just wondering if anyone's done it.

 

the only problem with just dropping the pan to replace a SPUN bearing, is that when a bearing spins, you usually want to have either the bock and main cap or rod and cap (depending on what bearing spun) measured and checked, cause typically when you spin them, to put it back together right, you need to have it line-honed at a machine shop...

but don't get me wrong, it CAN be done; a rod bearing would be a lot easier to replace in the motor than a main, that's for sure, BUT, only if the crank jurnal still looks good... if it's scared, and you put another new bearing in it, it's just going to eat that one too...

 

Its still put together, so I won't know what all's wrecked until i tear it down.

I'm saying its spun just judging off noise. I've built a ton of honda/acura engines, and i'm just going off what it sounds like.
