Gearing and transmission questions.

hey all,Ive been done a TON of research and just can't seem to find the answers im looking for.ok, so I have a 3.0 with an automatic transmission.I will be upsizing my tires really shortly to the 35-37 range.Now Ive read that a tranny cooler will be needed but what I havent really seen yet is will I need to go to a 5.71 instead of a 5.29 to make up for the power loss of a auto.That also got me thinking.If I do go with 5.71s will that eliminate the need for a cooler?I know a little about gearing and from the knowledge I have in it 5.71s will make 35s turn like factory tires on 4.10s.or atleast that is what I have gathered from my research.If that is true why would I need the cooler on the transmission since It won't be working any harder than normal?

A tranny cooler is a good investment to look into regardless.

go with the 5.71s...
and invest in the tranny cooler... those autos have enough problems as is, so why not help it out a lil?

Read up on the 5.71 some people say they are weak and some say they are fine.
I like my 5.29 and I run 37" tires but I have a 5 speed.

The auto tranny and tcase are plenty strong, it's a matter of shearing and heating the fluid because the overdrive is so tall that the torque converter won't ever lock up. NOTE: the problem is the overdrive, not first! If this is a trail only rig, that's one thing - if it's going to drive at highway speeds, it's quite another!

5.71 may be the stock ratio for 35's, but IMHO, the automatics are undergeared from the factory. You are going to be SERIOUSLY undergeared with 5.71 and 37's.

Molly's rig was a 3.0 with 35's and 5.71's here's my thoughts:
- the motor blew because it was worked too hard
- the first time she took it over a pass, the tranny light came on. Now we have tcase issues. Related? Maybe - they share the same fluid.
- it is a DOG compared to mine which is manual transmission, 33's, 4.88

All of that will be rectified when we get the 3.4 in ...

From what ive read from a few different places 5.29s are the correct ratio for 35s even in a auto.

My dad had a 84 p/u with 22r and a auto.Now He had it a long time ago so I can't say for myself if it was true but he had 11 inches of lift with 39.5tsls with 5.71 gearing done and he said it would turn the tires better than stock gears turned to stock tires.I asked him about over heating of tranny or any problems with it and he said none.He said atleast 3 times a week he would take it wheeling offraod with buddys and not once did he have a problem with the transmission.

idk everyones got different luck I guess.

Plug in your current then plug in what you will have

Maybe it will make it easier for you to decide.

Well, for 2nd gen 4Runners with an automatic, FACTORY was 31" = 4.88

Simple extrapolation makes that:
33" = 5.29
35" = 5.71
