So I recently purchased a 00 limited 4runner 4x4 with 90K on it and today I was driving home from work and I actually had the window down and the music off and I start hearing this noise. Its like a scraping sound almost like taking sand paper across wood. It gets faster as my speed increases. I got home jacked the runner up in the front and started turning both wheels. Sure enough I could imitate the sound it was coming from what seemed to be the back of the rotor. I could get the sound to happen on both front wheels the back ones were fine. The cv's looked good as did everything else, also the runner was just inspected and the brakes passed so I don't think it could be worn brake pads but I could be wrong. Does anyone know what this sound could be?

 

The outer housing could have gotten bent into the rotor.

 

Do you think that would be the case on both wheels though?

 

do you need new brakes?

grab yourself a lil pry bar, and try to even out the gap between the rotor and the dust shield. It doesnt take much to get those bastards outta shape.

Rears are drum brakes, backer plate instead of dust shield. (does similar thing, but has more BEEF!)

 

Hey nah2323 are you talking from experience or how are you so sure its the dust shield? I really am glad if thats all it is. Do you think its possible to be like that on both front wheels at the same time or is this more likely to happen on one wheel I only ask because I can make the sound with Both front wheels. Also whats the easiest way to check for what you are saying it could be? Jack it up and take the wheel off I assume is that all I would need to do? Thanks for the help

 

Does anyone else out there have any idea what this could be? Its both front wheels and it does it regardless if I am turning braking or going any certain speed. Its more noticeable at lower speeds however.

 

Gavy, nah 2323 is correct. I had this similar problem on my 02 limited. Did that same exact thing, squeak went away. BUT changed my brakes and rotors at the same time. SO I'm thinking its one or the other.

 

Yep you guys were correct. I jacked it up and turned the wheel as far as i could on each side and sure enough the dust shield was rubbing. I bent it back with my hands and problem solved. Thanks Guys for the help
