3rd Gen electronic speedo's???

I have been searching around to find this out, but it seems like a lot of people can guess at it, but aren't 100% sure.

What years are the 3rd Gen speedo's electronic, rather than cable?

I know my '92 is, but I want to start searching for an SR5 gauge cluster, and would like to know what years to look at in junk yards.

Thanks.

I don't know if there is a set date. My 89 is cable and both my 92s were electric. The 89 had the same driveline as the 2nd gens w56s with gear case. I think once they went to the G52 + chain Xcase they went electric which was 90-91. Maybe someone with a 90 or 91 can say what is in there truck.

Wow, I thought there would be a little more input on this.

Our 91 2wd truck is cable...
regardless of the year, should be simple to ID- look for the cable going through the firewall to the speedo.
should be right about where the orange circle is-

Thanks Abe, not a bad idea. The only thing is here in NY they don't let you go and pull your own parts, or even look at the truck, you have to tell them what you want and what year you want and they will pull it out of stock or pull it off a vehicle and bring it up.

So if I knew the years of electronic speedo's I can call around asking for a range of years for the SR5 cluster.

I am pretty sure 92-94 had electronic, so I have 3 years to work with, but I may just call up Nix99 or Rancho Toyota and just ask for one with the electronic speedo....seems like it may be the easiest/fastest option.

yeah, through my SR5 cluster swap, I came to the conclusion that 89-91 were cable, and 92-94 were electric

my 91 is cable

We have the "pick and pull" type yards around here, and some full service like what you're describing. The full service here though will let you go look but they have to pull.

But I'd say yeah, PM DeathCougar and see what he can come up with for you. Rancho Toyota (if we're talking about the same yard in Rancho Cordova, CA) will let you go around and look too but they have to pull (if you pull, it doesn't save you any money)... and isn't any help if you're in NY.

Seems the consensus is 92-95 though so that should help you narrow things down in your area.

92-94 actually. In 1995 they switched back to a cable drive speedo just for one year, until they redesigned the electronic speedo "cable" system.
