teach me about "drive-by wire" specifics
Looking at what a seller says is a 2003 3.4L . Searching here appears to indicate that motor is "DBW" (which started in about 2002) and to be avoided. However, upon inspection, the throttle body has the three pulleys (it's an automatic) that older motors have. I don't see why this won't work for a donor but I don't fully understand the dbw. There must be more to understand than what I'm reading here. Thanks for any help.

The seller doesn't know anything other than he was told it was a 2003. He's an installer whose client walked away owing him money. He's trying to sell the motor to recoup some of his costs.
There are two issues that hold me back from buying the motor. The first is that I'm told here to avoid dbw. I think that's because that dbw motor have an electronic signal to the throttle body. This motor has three pulleys on the tb. I presume for throttle, cruise, and auto kickdown. My questions is: if the motor has the means to accept a throttle cable, do I need to worry anymore in regards to any other negative aspects of what might be dbw? There is a harness but no ECU.
Other issues is that although this is a 35,000 mile motor (no proof), there are no accessories attached. But it seems that the more I reasearch here, the more I find that except for 1)AC clutch and or pulley and 2)PS pump, the 3.0 accessories can be used. Does that make sense?
Thanks

My limited understanding is that DBW requires a specific ECU matched to the engine. It's all about emissions control. DBW dampens throttle inputs slightly, especially on the transition between some throttle and idle, allowing the TB butterfly to close slowly instead of snapping shut. That reduces one or more pollutants, forgot which, that could otherwise get by pre- and main cats. I think.
Anyway, it's much more than a TB swap and affects everything else controlled by the ECU including CC.

I'm learning now. I had no idea there was an ECU-throttle connection. So there must be a servo motor or something similar to respond to an electronic signal from the ECU.
The seller doesn't have the ECU. This motor is sounding like more work than it's worth. I still don't have proof that it really is DBW though. I didn't recognize that TB as beingany different from others I have seen.
thanks

Actually, this might help you out. It's not a great picture, but it's all I have access to here at work. This is a from a 2002 4Runner drive by wire.
