[Nor-Cal] HIGHLAKES run.. memorial day weekend.

May 23rd and 24th, 2009.

So who is gonna make it?

Post up whether or not you will be going.. We are going to head up there saturday morning and leave Sunday.

I will link the other thread we have going i just felt this would be a better thread to post if you are going to make it.

So we will be leaving MAGALIA, ca at 9am..
We have plans to meet in front of the dolly o" doughnuts, and leave all at once. It is on skyway road, right near the Vallejo gas station so we can all get gas before hand.

As time tightens up, i wanted to point out a few things about the Highlakes area and impress upon all that are coming some simple things you will need.
1. I will hit the worst one first. There are no toilets facilities in the Highlakes areas. leaving little bundles of TP all over the place is also not an option if we wish to continue using the area. some people use 5 gallon buckets filled with kitty litter, and some use the garbage bag bury method. I don't care how you do it, but which ever way you do - do it right. So think of this before hand!!!
2. Shovels we will be headed up into the national forest. for fire and saftey reasons it is highly recommended that you carry a shovel at all times. many fires started buy man could have been put out in the first 2 minutes with a shovel alone. instead thousands of acres burn every year just because we are irresponsible.
3. Water Yes we will be camped at a small lake but a fair amount of drinking water as well as emergency water should be on hand. ( very few of us think of this when we head out for a day of wheeling)
4. Garbage bags haul it in haul it out!!! if you see a bottle or can on the side of the road pick it up or atleast CB to me and I will. I am sure Mike feels the same.

Now I am sure I didn't have to write half of that stuff for most but it is better to have it discussed than otherwise.

Yes guys pick up trash when you stop etc.
I always throw tons of beer cans and bottles that i find, in the back of my truck when i go up.

Also i would suggest bringing a change of clothes/shoes/etc. There will still be some snow up there i am sure. I cannot say how much we will run into but there will be some and having wet feet sure sucks, so it would either be benificial to have spare shoes or some nice boots.

Bring food, im sure thats a no brainer, but we are going to be up there two days im sure youll get the munchies.

You don't need to make this a full out camping trip with everythign but the kitchen sink, but just bring enough to keep yourself safe, warm, and not hungry thirsty.

See you there!

im sure all of you are in the know when it come to trail courtesy but heres an email i got regarding memorial weekend at the highlakes.

Hello, Friends,

Saturday May 23 through Monday May 25 is the Memorial Weekend, and it is expected that we may have crowds wishing to use The High Lakes.

The Forest people FPO, and Rec. people, and in particular Law Enforcement are going to be up there, and hope that we can come up with some volunteers, willing and able to take a place at the entrances, and pass out brochures, talk with the people, and let them know the situation up there.

I know it is a long period of time, but if we set a schedule, and have enough volunteers will to man a check point for 3 hours each, on each of the days, it would help immensely.

Can I hear from enough people willing to pitch in, and help?

Say Saturday 8:00 - 11:00
11:00 - 2:00
2:00 - 5:00
5:00 - 8:00

Sunday 8:00 - 11:00
11:00 - 2:00
2:00 - 5:00
5:00 - 8:00

Monday 8:00 - 11:00
11:00 - 2:00
2:00 - 5:00

That way it would take a little of your personal time, yet mean so much to help law Enforcement, and Friends of The High Lakes.

Please if you can help, write as soon as possible to:

memorial@friendsofthehighlakes.com

It is planned that Law Enforcement will be at both the traditional north entrance, above Spring Valley, as well as the south entrance, near Pine Creek, at 610/617/615 so that doubles the need for the above same schedule.

I'm hoping the Oroville people can organize the south entrance, and the Chico/Ridge people the north entrance... but we can be flexible, depending upon the number of you volunteering.

Volunteer hours will be granted, which provide enormous help in getting our grants with in-lieu money.

And I'd really appreciate all of your help, in signing up, and choosing your place and hours.

Thanks,

Ken

Sounds like a good safe weekend up there. Everyone make sure all your P's and Q's are in order. I am amazed that there will be that type of public personell there with all the other things locations being packed.

should someone bring a shotgun or something for protection????

because last time i went camping up north, i had a mountain lion 5 feet from me, with 2 more in the bushes 25 feet away.

I AM NOT SAYING SHOOT THE ANIMAL, but just get a shot off to scare them away.
