1991, V6, extended cab 5 speed. For the last 2 weeks my clutch has increasingly been harder to shift into all gears, and reverse is all but abandoned. this week I have only used 2nd an 5th. It stays in gear and doesn't pop out, pedal seems firm, little play at top but nothing unusual. If it's in 1st and I start it, it grabs the gear a little and moves, I think I have dented the floorboard. Clutch master fluid is good, at max level. I have about 40-50K on the current clutch, but the other didn't go out likr this.
Since there are many other parts involved with the clutch, I was hoping it was not the clutch/pressure plate, etc. Any/All advise is very much appreciated.

 

When you replaced the clutch, did you get a new throw out bearing along with everything else?

 

I had the motor replaced, the guy (said) he replaced Timimg belt, seals...etc, I told him to replace clutch, pressure plate , throw out bearing, but who knows... the clutch does seem to enguage closer to the floor.

any other ideas are appreciated.

I forgot to mention that the repairs were done 3 years ago, but I could try bleeding it if I knew how, if someone would point me in the right direction on how to do that, that would be great. Thanks.

 

Try to adjust the rod that comes thru your firewall and connects to your pedal, it will adjust out longer if u take it off the pedal and unscrew the piece that connects to the pedal.

 

I will try that and let you know, I looked at that at first, but to me it didn't look like it would come loose from the pedal to adjust the rod, but I did see the nut. Thanks.

 

Not sure what your level of expertise is, so I'll make this detailed.

The BEST way is to get a vacuum brake bleeder at Sears or your local parts store. That way you can do it by yourself. You connect the bleeder to the bleeder fitting on the transmission & crack it open while you maintain vacuum on the line until you have new fluid coming through.

Second best is to get a friend to get about 2 feet of clear hose small enough to go over the end of the bleeder nipple on the slave cylinder located on the passenger side of the transmission (looks similar to a grease fitting). Put the hose over the end, put the other end into a clear glass/cup, & crack open the bleeder fitting with a (10mm?) wrench while a buddy holds the clutch to the floor (don't open until the clutch is on the floor). Then close it up again, have your buddy let off the clutch, & repeat as necessary until you get new/clean fluid in the glass (trust me, you want to replace all the old goop). There is a "gravity bleed" some ppl have used, but I'm not familiar with it.

Go here. It will tell you how to properly bleed the system. These systems are very finicky and if done improperly they will not work (same with the brakes). You're going to need someone to help you to do it right.

 

followed bleeding instructions but still not getting enouph preasure to ingage cluch slave only pushes 1/3 of distence

 

Check for cracked and broken clutch pedal bracket its a well known problem I had the same problem. And was hard to shift into any gear especialy 1st and reverse.

Best bet is to either get a new one from junk yard or take yours out and stiffen it up with plate steel there a thread around here about some who did it.
