'94 Toyota 4x4 4cyl - erratic idle!
Posting for my dad. He has a 1994 Toyota truck, 4x4 with the 22RE engine.
It has developed an erratic idle. The idle goes up and down on its own and even worse when the engine is cold. What is even more strange is that when you depress the brake, the idle goes way down and it still idles up and down. I was guessing maybe a vacuum leak, but I don't know. We cannot hear any air hissing, but later this evening he said he drove it and now it is "whistling". Any advice appreciated. My dad is an older disabled Veteran on a "fixed" income and trying to help him make his 300k mile 21 year old truck last a little longer. He had a fairly nice later model F150 that was really reliable, but had to sell it to get a 4x4.
Thanks!

I would burp the system, raise the front end as high as possible and with the radiator cap off, let the thermostat cycle a few times to get air out of the system.
On the whistling noise, your VSV valves on the valve cover have little mufflers that may be clogged or damaged and I have seen them make the whistling noise.

I would check for vacuum leaks and disconnected vacuum lines. The sticker on the top right side of your hood is a good reference. There are a lot of sneaky vacuum lines on this engine lol

Thanks. This had went away until he had to tear it down to replace the head gasket and now it is back again (erratic idle) could be lots of things this time.

Had the same problem with mine except I would lose heat from the heater core. Couldn't find what it was it and it went on for about 3 years. Turned out to be a slow leak in the head gasket.
When it starts to idle erratically do you still get heat from the heater core?
