I'm consider purchasing a set of Bilstein front adjustable shocks but am having trouble choosing which spring I should go with. I have a badlands bumper on the front at about 100lbs. The cheaper the better so if something OEM Toyota would work that would be great. I think Sonoran Steel uses one from a Tundra. Can anybody confirm this or recommend a spring? Any help would be great.

 

Id say OME 881's or 882's..

I think the 882's would be more suited to your front end with (guessing you have a V6) and your front bumper..

No I was addressing the OP. It appears you have already made your choice. I would just like to point out to the OP to read Sonoran's FAQ (just a little further down the page that I linked). Specifically #s 8, 11, and 12. Make of it what you will, I just like to have as much info as possible before a purchase. Also, keep in mind the OME setup isn't adjustable. Best of luck.

Not at all. Very likely that OME setup will work very nicely for you as well.

I figure everyone has their own priorities. For some, a $300 savings is the most important thing. For others, the ability to get a part in Butthead Egypt is the driving force.

 

Check out OME 882's. I have them and really like them so far. They're work especially well on 3rd gens with a heavy bumper, but I'm running them with my stock bumper and got right at 3" of lift on my '02. You'll probably get less lift with your bumper, but they will do well with the Bilstein shocks.

The reason I was asking about Toyota factory springs was because I could probably find a used set pretty easy and cheap. Does anybody know if the OME springs are the same height as stock ones or what?? Just trying to make sure I don't get too much lift from the Bilstein/OME setup.

 

I would avoid using stock springs with this setup, especially used ones. They have thinner diameter coils and a reduced spring rate, which will lead to sagging over time. The OME coils have a 500 lb. spring rate and .63" diameter coils and most likely will not sag, no matter how long they're on.

The OME 882 coils are considerably longer than stock. In fact, if you're running a shock with stock travel measurements and full extended length, they won't fit. I'm not very familiar with the Bilstein adjustable shocks, but I would think they'd work fine with the 882's. With that setup, you'll want the lift to come from the springs, not the shocks.

 

Thanks EP. I'm sure the factory springs would work fine if I could just find out which ones Steve at Snonran Steel uses in his setup. He has done so much testing that I truly believe he knows what is best. I know it's from a tundra so it should be designed to carry more weight anyways.

I would like to use the OME's but just don't know where I need to set everything up when assembling them to get the right height for my lift. Maybe someone will chime in.

Just got off the phone with Toytec and he said that I should only use a Toyota factory spring with these shocks because that is what they base the lift amount on and anything else would be too much. He also said they actually work well together. The main fault in the factory coilover setup is the crappy shock Toyota uses.

 

I swapped out my stock 06 tundra shocks for a set of adjustable bilsteins with stock springs and love them. The valving is perfect sway control is much improved steering response is better and I got a 2.5 inch lift. I know this is a different vehicle but my suggestion would be try out the shocks with stock springs first, then if you think you need more do some research on springs. Just my 2 pennies

 

Those are not the same shocks. Those are Tacoma adjustable shocks. Many people have tired those but the valveing is way off, what you end up with is a truck that bounces down the road.

The second number is real far off.

Thanks Steve but don't you guys use the Bilstein adjustable on Tacoma's as well?? Isn't the shock the same part number for both Taco's and Runners?? Any help would be great.

 

We do use the same custom shock for both the 4Runner and Tacoma. The shock we use IS NOT the Tacoma specific Adjustable shock. It was one made specifically for our setup.

Look at the shocks body itself, much larger, 5 adjustment settings, not 3 and finally the lower bushing is much larger. Inside is custom valved to what we found to be ideal. Extended length was spec'ed out too.

I had to buy a very large quantity of these to get them made.
