ratcheting sound after 4.7 gear install

I just finished my TG 4.7 gear install into my t-case. While driving it around I noticed that when in 4-LO, it makes a ratcheting sound when I release the gas. The sound only occurs when I'm in 3rd, 4th, or 5th gear, but not when in 1st or 2nd. The sound goes away once I accelerate a bit, but comes back right when I let off the gas. The noise gets softer as I decelerate while coasting, and eventually stops once I coast really slow. Any ideas?

I also noticed a slight buzzing or humming sound when in 2-HI and 4-HI, however, it's pretty mild. I have to turn off the radio and really pay attention to actually hear it. I'm not even sure if anyone else would notice it. It might have actually been there before, but I just barely now noticed it because I'm actually paying attention. So for now I'm mostly concerned about the ratcheting sound described above.

Call up the guys at TG on Monday. I've had to call them a few times for stuff and they are VERY helpful with tech and installs...or try the TG forum.

Let us know what it is.

You should not have any noise, I would not run it in 4wd till you figure it out.

I just unbolted and front driveshaft from the t-case, and it still makes the same sounds. So my conclusion thus far is that it is not some sort of front driveline vibration, which was my initial thought.

I'm wondering if maybe I didn't clearance enough of either the shift forks or the t-case housing, as indicated in the TG instructions. I felt like I was pretty diligent about making sure I clearanced enough though. On the bench, everything spun fine without touching anything else. I really hope I don't have to disassemble the entire thing just to grind some more!!

What I'm hoping is that this is just a normal "break in" period for the gears, but this is probably overly optimistic. I'm not gonna run it until I speak to the Trail Gear guys on Monday.

Well I just got off the phone with Trail Gear. The tech I spoke to was super friendly and helpful, but to be honest, he didn't sound like he was super knowledgeable. He wasn't really sure what could be causing the noise. He advised that I use the 4x4 and then worry about it if the sound gets worse.

I then called a local toyota 4x4 shop, who I believe are very knowledgeable and experienced. They told me that the "humming" I hear in 4-HI and 2wd is probably normal, as this slight increase in noise is typical of lower gear installations. Regarding the clicking sound heard in 4-LO, they said that it could be possible that I didn't clear enough off of the shift forks. The under clearancing is probably very minor, since the noise is not constant. If I completely failed to clear the forks, the noise would be constant and would also drive noticeably different. Their advise also was to run it and see if the noise changes at all. They said that the gears will finish the grinding work on the forks if it is very minor.

What do you guys think?

Sounds viable to me. I can definatley believe the hum noice being because of the lower gear set. I'm sure the gears are a lot stronger than the forks and probably will grind anything that's in their path. If you run it, change out the oil after some milage and see what you find. If it bothers you, take the darn thing apart and double check it!

the only thing that would concern me is if it is minor clearancing that woudl grind away only, That woudl be a judgement call for you to make.

cause in my expereice some sounds just get worst until something wins and something looses causing breakage

like this LOL:

I just realized that I forgot to put the bearing retainer clip back in when reinstalling the gears . Here's a pic of what I'm talking about

From a bit of searching, I've learned that this clip is mostly there simply to prevent the bearings from slipping out when you are working on the t-case or moving it around. Do you think it prevents noise though? Could this be my problem?

Well, there's only one way to find out!!

I'm sorry, I can't see the pic(I'm at work and fun isn't allowed), so I'm assuming you got the case all back apart? Did you look over the areas you had to clearance?

Nope, I didn't open it up. I was cleaning my tools on the bench and noticed that the clip was still on the bench

I don't really want to tear the case apart again to install the clip if it's a pretty low probability that the missing clip is actually the problem.

well, i would think that if the clip isnt in there holding the bearing in there nice and snug like it should be then there has got to be a little bit of play in it... even if its miniscule it might still chatter at higher RPMs...

It serves a purpose or they would've eliminated it since it's aftermarket.

It's actually not aftermarket. It came on the stock cases. The reason I forgot about it is because the TG instructions didn't make mention of it. Nevertheless, I think you're right in that it serves a purpose. What I'm wondering is whether that purpose to to quiet down the gears.

he meant if it wasn't needed the aftermarket companies would have said that it was not a necessary.
