I just recently updated my guages from the stripped down dash, to the SR5 Guages. All guages are working accept for the oil presure guage. When you turn the key the first click, everything comes alive, and the oil pressure needle rises up. Then once I start it, everything functions correctly, but the oil pressure guage slowly bottoms out and stays there. I know I do have oil pressure for certain though. Is the wire for this on the bottom passenger side of the motor, under, and in front of the starter? What wire can I trace or test to make sure it is getting feed to the guage? Thanks in advance!

 

did you change out the oil pressure sending unit? You need the one for the SR5 cluster, not the one for the dummy light.

 

yup. the basic sender is simply an on-off type of thing that turns on the light if the oil pressure is too low. the sr5 cluster needs a different sender that gives a variable signal depending on the pressure.
...and likely you've damaged the gauge on your cluster due to using the standard sending unit.

I guess I should have said my sender is from a 93 SR5 truck, other years may look different. BTW that sender is pictured on a 5VZFE.

Is that based on any field evidence or just from speculation posted in other threads? I ran for over a month with mismatched oil pressure sending unit without damaging the gauge.

Of course, I didn't leave the ignition on with the engine stopped for extended periods of time (situation in which the needle is pegged at the top).

 

Good question, actually.
I don't have the SR5 cluster in mine and have not done the change so cannot speak with absolute authority on it but it seems to be an exception when an SR5 cluster survives use of the idjet light sending unit, and not the rule. The standard sender is basically an 'open' / 'grounded' unit whereas the SR5 sender is a variable resistance unit (and I believe doesn't go completely to ground even with 0 PSI) and the current when the standard on is grounded can burn out the windings in the gauge.
But I will say it's not just 411 from other threads here on Yotatech, but other threads on several other forums as well.
