YoYoMa's rebuild thread.

I After gong through the piles of recipts dating back to 96 and realising that my 4runner has been pooping steering parts every year like clockwork since it was wrecked in 06 that I'm going to just replace it all. So, About a week ago i started collecting parts. Today I started Cleaning the ridiculosly dirty trans and tcase I picked up last night.

I also got 90% of my new IFS stuff. But, before I put it all on I need to know if my frame is bent or diamonded. The local crawl shop said that may be why it keeps wearing out parts so quickly. Anyone know how to check this?

Bust out the ol tape measure, and measure from outside framerail to outside frame in the front, middle, and rear of your rig. Write down the numbers, and check against the numbers (I think) in the FSM........

I would have done that but how? It kept telling me the images were too large?

strange, I've never ran into issues with image size, unless YT has now started a newer-user limit... but I just glanced at the rules really quick, and it's not mentioned...

I'm going to dissasemble the IFS parts that I have and see if the local dealer has the brass spindle bushings. Then everything is getting stripped, cleaned and rust-oleum flat blacked. Tomarrow I am going to commence dissasembly of my truck to see just how bad everything is. Hopefully I can have it all back together by the weekend. Any more ideas on checking the frame? The FSM i have is in russian.

lol nice use of the ex's dress

Why not just soak the degreaser in there and then use a power washer on that? It would have stripped away all of that junk in a matter of minutes not hours

Really? I was figuring cracks. Thats good to hear then. I was thinking stress cracks due to the locations and amount of gunk around them. But thinking about it again the trans in the truck has the same marks. When I did my clutch I had noticed them and it worried me a bit.

oh no, you're safe with those

you'll find them on all the cast parts, like the intake manifold, 3rd memeber housing, ect...

They are common on scads of aluminum die castings like the transmission/TC cases. My W56 has the same thing as does the T5 in my Mustang, the Tremec and M5OD in the garage, the M5OD and 1354 in my Explorer, and the crankcase halves in my Honda XR600, just to name a few. Sand and investment castings typically do not have these markings.

Those are casting marks. Everything looks fine from the outside. My truck's clutch must have exploded at some point, because I have a couple of weird cracks and a hole where some bit must have actually exited the bell housing. Don't coast down hills with the clutch in in low range, your clutch is still spinning, and will fail if it is spun much above redline.

I got a bit accomplished this afternoon. I got the entire ifs out minus the dIff. After seeing what was going on in the drivers side I was glad I got new spindles but was left wishing I had gotten a hub rebuild kit. I found water rust a siezed bearing and a lock washer that decided to separate a tooth. In regards to both sides everything had more play than (insert funny here) and I removed the spindle nuts by HAND.
Tomarrow I am going to prep the parts I bought and drop the driveline as well as remove my oil pan and timing cover to do all those gaskets. The timing chain was replaced last year with one with metal guides so I am just going to give it a looksee while im in there. I also want to check the trueness of the frame before I start reassembly but I dont know the measurements or how to do it. My connection is way too slow to torrent or download anything. It took me a few hours just to upload these pics:







jackstands fixed my rear sag. i didnt realise how front heavey these were.

Hey - Not to be a bearer of bad news, but I happened to notice the jackstands sitting on cinder blocks... Not the best of ideas. I had a Mustang set up like that one time in my yard and the stress and uneven force on the block caused the block to crumble... luckily I wasn't near the car when this happened. I'd definetly go with wood or something if necessary.

Thanks for the heads up. Thats why I didint do the trans or tcase today, I really didnt want to get under the car!

just a concern, but isn't the block under the rear wheel on the wrong side of the wheel?

shouldn't it be behind the wheel to keep it from rolling backwards?
