TOYOTA 1's 1986 4Runner Build-Up Thread

hey guys!

my lady and i recently bought a 4runner,(86 22re 4x4 5spd) for $1500 as a project for her. she eventually wants it to be her dd, but it needs some work. i have a couple questions, and I'm sure ill have some more along the way. so i thought i would just start sort of build up thread, and ask all my questions here.

the po swapped in an 89 22re, and that would be ok except he tossed the original 86 intake and used the newer 89 which is different. he said it runs, but acts like it misses.

1. would it be ok if i just put a 86 plenum on the 89 lower, or would i have to swap it all back to 86?

thanks in advance, Mike

oh and heres a pic

Spray some carb cleaner around the injector seals and intake seals and see if it revs up, if so you have a leak. He had to keep the original injectors because 89 injector has a different plug on the harness.

yea i haven't checked for vacuum/intake leaks yet.

he did use the 86 injectors for that reason. but i figured id start with the intake etc.
because isn't the tps different also?
if so, wouldn't the new style tps conflict with the old style ecu?

Why anyone would swap a complete (intake to exhaust) engine into a vehicle like that is beyond me, unless they're going to swap the wiring, etc too. Swapping only the longblock assembly, though slightly more involved, is entirely possible without hitch and avoids all issues with emissions (other than installer ineptitude)- you can even swap an 85+ 22r engine into an 85+ 22re'd vehicle with few problems if it's only the longblock.

Now, to answer your question, you should be able to swap an early plenum onto the late lower with no issues. However you may have to get the proper PCV hoses, vacuum piping, VSV's, etc. for the 86 as well if those were also from the 89.

thanks Abe, i agree!
why he didn't use all the 86 efi on the 89 long block is beyond me!

i don't what else he used off the 89, but I'm assuming everything that hooks to the intake is from the 89, vsv's etc. i will have to take some pics of underneath the hood tomorrow, and then do a search to compare the parts and see what all he used from the 89.

so am i correct in assuming that the 89tps is messing with the 86 ecu?

thanks! yea i only have 3 good ones so new tires are the list

ok, so i got the correct plenum/tb, and the air control valve on there. now i need to know if the two vsv's are necessary? if so, how necessary are they? can i run the motor temporarily with out them?

thanks, Mike

OK, so i got it fired up. its missing on number 2 cylinder and i cant figure out why.

heres what Ive done so far,
new cap/rotor
new wires
new plugs
swapped injectors..

so my next idea is to test the wiring harness plug for that injector.

anybody have any info on how to do that? or know of anything else i should check?

thanks, Mike

OK so i figured out all the questions above on my own.

motor is running good, runner drives good, now its on to the cosmetics.

anyway i have a question about the n.w.o.r. rack that came on the runner.
is there suppose to be some sort of basket up there? am i missing some pieces?

i have searched and cant find any pics or info about this rack. any help would be great

thanks, mike

you mean #2 cylinder? I'm not sure lol. i had it tracked down to a fuel problem, and my dad had said to dump a lil fuel in there and start it and see if it smooths out for a sec. well i did that and it smoothed right up. never ran rough again until 3 days later. it threw a thermo sensor code and started running like poo so i replaced it and whalla..
crazy huh?

any ideas on this N.W.O.R. rack that i have?
