No problems with the CA smog checks with my modified intake. Did seem to boost the top end power, one long grade I go up to a popular wheeling trail used to drop bme down to about 45 in 3rd gear and after the intake mods were done, it would hold about 50 up that same hill:

I did the battery/intake swap and installed a Supra MAF. I don't have any hard numbers but I did gain some felt hp and a little fuel milage. The best part about it is that I've eliminated my 4th gear hill climb issues.
Matt I don't think that's a Supra that 4crawler has in there. It looks to be the stock MAF sitting on the stock airbox. I could be wrong though.

But I don't mind doing it again.
This is to my understanding and anyone can correct me if I'm wrong.
PAIR stands for Pulse Air Injection....I think the "R" stands for Reaction, can't remember. Anyways, it is part of emissions. It goes from the air box after the air filter through the hose that you mentioned, to the reed valve, which, like most valves, allows air/water/whatever to pass through one way, but not come back the other. From the reed valve it snakes around the rear of the engine in the copper looking tube to the top of the exhaust manifold (on the 22re). The venturi effect of the exhaust gases cause clean air to be pulled into the exhaust which speeds up oxidation in the catalytic converter on start up and idle.
