is there a intake mod for the 22re that helps get better millage and passes smog?

 

There are some kits on lcengineering.com ,but I don't know if it will pass smog .

No problems with the CA smog checks with my modified intake. Did seem to boost the top end power, one long grade I go up to a popular wheeling trail used to drop bme down to about 45 in 3rd gear and after the intake mods were done, it would hold about 50 up that same hill:

Where are you getting the air supply for the PAIR valve? I don't see that in the pic.

 

Don't think that exists on the '85/22RE, at least mine never had one. Not sure what year that started.

 

I'm pretty sure it was '89 as my '88 air box doesn't have the attachment for the PAIR valve. That said, there's a good chance it was introduced to different areas at different times.

I think you're right about the "different areas, different times". My '88 22rec has it.

 

I did the battery/intake swap and installed a Supra MAF. I don't have any hard numbers but I did gain some felt hp and a little fuel milage. The best part about it is that I've eliminated my 4th gear hill climb issues.

Matt I don't think that's a Supra that 4crawler has in there. It looks to be the stock MAF sitting on the stock airbox. I could be wrong though.

 

Stock '85 22RE AFM on mine, and it is a 22REC engine per the model info. plate on the firewall.

 

Stock works perfect.

 

Is the PAIR valve the second smaller hose that comes out of the air filter box?

Also, as a side question, can i take the resonator off and will there be any gainage in anything??? Or is that just for sound? Or is it for sound at all???

 

Yes, that hose leads to the PAIR reed valve.

 

I see. I did some google searching to find out what the PAIR valve is for, and couldnt find much. What does this valve do?

This is to my understanding and anyone can correct me if I'm wrong.

PAIR stands for Pulse Air Injection....I think the "R" stands for Reaction, can't remember. Anyways, it is part of emissions. It goes from the air box after the air filter through the hose that you mentioned, to the reed valve, which, like most valves, allows air/water/whatever to pass through one way, but not come back the other. From the reed valve it snakes around the rear of the engine in the copper looking tube to the top of the exhaust manifold (on the 22re). The venturi effect of the exhaust gases cause clean air to be pulled into the exhaust which speeds up oxidation in the catalytic converter on start up and idle.

 

when you modify your air intake would you have to adjust your timing?I plan on making a custom air intake but i know when you take the air hose off of the throttle body it dies.
