i have a bad power steering fluid leak in my 94 V6 4runnner. looks like the cover plate on the back of the pump thats held on by 2 bolts is leaking. anyone ever attempt a repair on this? i really dont want to buy a new ps pump because a .29 cent seal went bad.

 

ever consider replacing the .29 cent seal and seeing how it fares?

 

Hi there, I just replaced my power steering pump a couple months ago for the same leak. There is no way to repair it without removing it. You can buy a rebuild kit but after looking in the service manual to see what is involved, I decided to buy a rebuilt pump with a lifetime warranty for $89.00. The OEM was several hundred, not worth it in my opinion.

It also requires ATF, transmission fluid, not power steering fluid...

If you decide to remove it, just to save you the hassle I went through, expect the pulley bolt to be stuck pretty good. I had to remove the pump with the engine bracket still attached and then use my 1/2" impact to remove that bolt, it was really stuck...

To answer your question, I decided against the rebuild of this pump due to the invloved nature of doing it correctly. And if you go to the trouble of removing it, I would not want to have to do it again! Hope this info is helpful. Good Luck!

 

try replacing the o ring under the reservoir first, I thought my pump was bad and that is all it was. you can pop the res off with removing the pump.

 

A rebuild is just a couple of hours worth of work and not really that difficult. Just keep track of what you are doing and follow the FSM and it's no problem.

 

I rebuilt mine, it isn't too hard if you follow the FSM.

 

x2... easy... just takes a bit of time to get all the seals. I don't recommend taking the pump off and just replacing one seal. Get the rebuild kit and do it right.

 

thats what i was hoping for. i really dont want to replace my pump with some aftermarket junk. i just want to reseal it. i see on autozones website that duralast makes a reseal kit for $16. thats the route i'm gonna go. thanks guys.

Yeah... for something like this, you only want to have to do it once. Go OEM. The price is comparable.

 

i agree. if my local yota dealer has this in stock i'de rather use the genuine toyota stuff. i'll swing by on my way home tomorrow and see if they have one.

 

Even if your local dealership doesn't stock the kit, they should be able to get it in a couple of days. Doesn't sound like it's a "must fix today" kind of leak... I would wait until you can get the OEM kit... assuming it's not on some crazy long backorder.
