Hi,

I'm new to the forum but have owned my 1987 Toyota Pickup since new.

My dome lightbulb burned out awhile ago, and I'm having a hard time finding a replacement bulb.

Who makes a aftermarket dome lightbulb and what is the part #.

Also, is there a much brighter aftermarket replacement?

if u got a pep boys near ya, they carry those. by the way, its a sealed beam headlamp, so ur gonna have to replace the entire light.

 

Not the headlamps. The dome lightbulb in the cab. The one above the mirror.

 

went through a similar issue with my 88. no one in the SF bay area had one on the shelf. ended up finding one at an Autozone a bit south from there.

I used an LED bulb in mine:

But you should be able to find a 30mm festoon bulb at most auto parts stores.

The bulb looks a lot like an old style fuse. If you have an SR5 truck, the door lights and the rear deck light all use the same type of bulb. Usually two different wattages available, 3 and 10 watts. I do carry some LED replacements that put out about the same light as the 10W bulb, not quite as bright as the 1 watt LED bulb I have, but they run about 1/2 the price.

 

i would like to have some brighter light inside the cab of my '86 also...any replacements that are lots brighter..mine is WAY dim...i'lll probably add some more lights inside the cab..(i.e. glove box, 2 in the rear, under the dash..)thanks for the help!

 

Best option for more light out of the dome light is an LED. The "reflector" in the stock dome light is a joke. The advantage of LEDs is they have internal reflectors and a lens to spread out the light, so they will work even with no reflector or diffuser. The 1 watt Luxeon bulb I have (from taskled.com) is amazing, it'll leave momentary spots in your vision if you stare directly at it and then look away. It and the smaller SBL LEDs both have a nearly 180 degree light pattern, so light up everything in the cab very evenly. You can easily read by the light from them and being an LED, they draw less than 0.1 amp of current.

 

the older board like you have 4crawler are not available anymore...is the new ones they have just as bright or brighter???

 

Haven't tried the newer design but 70 lumens is pretty bright. The 30mm LEDs I have in the door and deck light locations are around 24 lumens and pretty bright. I also have a 42mm LED bulb in my VW dome light and it is around 66 lumens and just about as bright as the Luxeon bulb in my 4Runner. So my guess if that the new taskled dome light is probably just about as bright, although it seems to pull quite a bit more current (350mA vs. around 100mA for the smaller LEDs).

In short:

1. I have not seen the brightness of the new taskled dome light module with 70 lumen output.

2. I have seen a smaller LED dome bulb with 24 lumen output and it is pretty bright.

3. I have also seen a larger LED dome bulb with 66 lumen output and it is hella bright.

Executive summary: I would wager a guess that the new 70 lumen LED is also hella bright!

And after checking the Luxeon web site (http://www.luxeonstar.com/), they state that the Luxeon Rebel LED is the brightest LED they offer.

Just go to superbrightleds.com and find the bulb, it'll give you reference charts, it is well worth the 10$ or less dollars, probably won't ever burn out and it's brighter than hell. It's so bright if I open my back windows it's like I have a cargo lamp.

Is there a huge difference between the 4 and 9 LED bulbs?

 

I've run a 6-LED festoon bulb and it was OK in brightness but nothing like the high power LEDs. And the biggest difference is the multi-LED bulbs have like 30-50 degree beam patterns (like a spot light) while the high power ones are closer to 180 degree wide angle beams. And look at the lumen output, the 4 and 9 LED bulbs are like 4-7 lumen, the high power LEDs are in the low 20s.

 

I'm looking for the high powered ones from luxeonstar.com but i can't figure out with one will work on my truck.

 

That is the mfg. of the bare LEDs. None of them will work directly. You'll need to build a current regulator, put that and the LED on a circuit board and go with that. Or buy one already made up.
