Just wanted to share what I found to replace seat cable.
While searching I found a splitter type cable for BMX bikes.
They are on ebay for 8 dollars.
Looks like all you need is crimp or set screw collar for the cable end at the hinge.

I wish I had found something like this a year ago. I threw out a decent set of 1st Gen 4Runner seats that were in my '81 Trekker because of the cable issue.

Did you swap the set yet to make sure it works?

 

No not yet, I just looked at my seat today before I posted.
Probably should have waited, but I thought I was on to something.
