Ok for christmas i got a radio, i went and bought an adapter for my truck but i have a problem, i wired my radio to my adapter, got all the wires all hooked up the same except for the amp and illum. wire they didnt have a match on the adapter/radio.

Ok so what all do i plug my adapter too, it has 4 connectors on it, i have only been able to hook up one of them, how many connections do you plug the adapter to in your truck btw its a 85 pu

any help is much appreciated

 

If theres only one plug on the back of your radio thats it...

"you wired the radio to the adapter" Is the adapter not just a plug on plug or what ...?

 

It also depends on what brand the radio is (Kenwood, JVC, Sony etc). You may need an adapter for that too, to fit the adapter you've already fitted.

You should have this harness right here. The bigger plug has your front speaker wire and power and ground wires. The smaller plugg has your rear speaker wires. If you dont have any rear speakers (as some pickups did not) then there will only be the bigger plug that you need to hook up. In this case you will leave the purple and green wires of the radio harness un hooked along with the amp turn on and illumination wires you have already left off. Hope this makes sense.

ok well i did all that just like yall are saying hooked it to my radio but nothing happened, also the fact that my clock doesnt work and some other stuff may have to do with it lol, i may just not be getting power right there

 

Sounds like maybe a fuse problem? I would hook the factory radio back in and see if it works, if it doesnt start checking fuses. If the factory radio works then double check your wiring. Good luck.

i dont have a factory radio, it came without a radio and wires everywhere is there any chance someone could show me a picture of what all the wires that need to be hooked up look like, because i have a set or wires that doesnt have a plug

Do you have a multimeter to check and verify that you have power to the radio? Also, does the radio have a fuse on the back that could have blown?

 

sounds to me like whoever took the stock radio out cut the factory connector off...thus making your harness/adapter that you bought pretty much useless. You will probably have to wire the radios harness directly to your factory wiring

 

no, the connector is there and i had power to it, one2high yes i checked it with a mulitmeter, i had power to the connector, i had power to my ign. wire, idk if i had power to the constant power wire i didnt check it, and the fuse on the radio is not blown, i had it grounded through the chassis ground, idk what it was the radio just wont come on, and i know its a good radio

 

Most radios need 3 wires.
Main power-this needs to be a keyed 12v source (on/off with the key)
Ground- Duh.
Memory- this is a constant 12v source that stores your radio presets/clock.

I got my truck in the same condition you did, just a bunch of hacked wires. I believe I made my own ground and just attatched it to the floor under the dash instead of tracking the real one down, but they're usually green or black. I found two constant hot wires under there, I think one was the cig lighter and it isn't enough to keep my radio presets once I start the truck (power is cut during starting), been meaning to try the other one for a couple months now but I never get around to it. Best way to go is just grab your test light and start finding what wire does what.

 

you were right, thats exactly what happened, i was trying to hook the wrong connector up to power my radio, now all i have to do is figure out what wires do what
