It's a very high pitched kinda whine/ring and it only happens when going between 40-55ish and when im on the gas. As soon as i let off it goes away.
any ideas?

Rear pinion???

I had a similar problem in a CJ-5, it ended up being the rear differential was over-filled with fluid after servicing.

 

that makes sense because i recently regeared and installed a locker, so you think that over-filling the diff would cause that noise?

 

Aye, that's what i'm sayin'... My noise showed up between 46-49 MPH, under acceleration only, similar to your problem...

How would you over fill the diff without it coming right back out the fill hole. You'd really need to stand the truck on end to over fill a diff, and if your truck is standing on end, you have bigger fish to fry than properly filling the diff

 

Where is this wine coming from, front or back. It is possible the backlash wasn't reset properly.

 

Matt16 has a very, very good point. Can't really overfill the diff....hehe.

i would say seeing as how you had a gear change you has something out of wack in there i would ask ZUK to help

 

Dude, my cj-5 (super-short wheelbase) had around 5-6 inches of lift, and the rear axle was setup spring over axle. I think I had around a 15-20 degree shim to realign my driveline angles, and it made it harder to fill the diff "full" because the drain plug was effectively lower.

Anyways, it invariably got over-filled by trying to squeeze more fluid in for fear of underfilling it. Then it made noise, and we took the diff cover off and rechecked everything, then refilled it with the exact amount specified, and it didn't make noise...

Anyways, what ever happened with your rear-diff noise 86auto?

sounds like the same problem that i have... in talking with ZUK, sounds like my pinion bearing is shot...
prolly your problem too... im going to try to tighten up the pinion bearing pre load, and while its out, reset the carrier bearing preload as well...
