take off grinding
i ran my 92 pickup rear diff half way out of fluid and now when i take off it is grinding. the more weight i put in the truck the more it grinds. it also howls a little bit when i get on the gas on the freeway. is this my bearings or the gears? i put 1400lbs of drywall in my bed yesterday and i could barley take off it was grinding so bad. when i drained the fluid there was no metal in it.

so you notice something wrong with your rear diff and you decide to put MORE weight in the truck and see how it drives then? sounds like a great idea...
ok, first off what kind of 92 pickup is it? 2wd/4wd, 4cyl/V6? if you're determined to DIY, i'd start with removing the 3rd and inspecting the insides to determine what type of failure is going on.
with the assumption that your truck has stock gearing, i'd say the easiest and cheapest way to get you back on the road would be to hit up a junk yard or the classifieds and pick up a used 3rd for cheap.
but i've got a question - how the hell do you get 1400# of drywall in the back of a yota anyways? the wheel wells are not even 4' apart so the drywall can lay flat...

you don't run a diff down to 1/2 full of gear oil...
... knowing there's a problem ...
... add 1400# of drywall ...
... and suddenly have no evidence of wear.
you don't add 3/4 ton of weight (particularly to a 1/2 ton truck)...
... when you know the rear end might be compromised
go troll somewhere else.

I gotta admit im just some dumb but that was just plumb really dumb you got a rear end problem and then overload your truck, toyota's are strong but ah duh, now that you grinded the rear end down open it up and look and go for repairs as mentioned above
